Having a hard time with the more physical Jets tonight. The 5-1 score suggested a road beat-down against the Jets but they out-hit the more physical team 31-23 and out-shot em 36-24......they just gave up way too many high danger chances. Better than another one goal loss though, maybe gettin' beat by four woke em up and they're startin' to get some guys back.

The home game with the Wings was canceled and they got a point from the Caps in a tough 3-2 OT loss before a nice X-mas break and beat Boston for the 2nd time this year last night in a SO. El Gatto got the go-ahead goal in the 2nd period on a real pretty play and the only SO goal to give the Sens the W before their biggest crowd since '16'...... www.nhl.com/gamecenter/bos-vs-ott/2022/12/27/2022020546#game=2022020546,game_state=final,game_tab=wrap Nice to have Stutzel back,Zub and Joseph any day and word is Norris could return by mid-January but Cam Talbot was the story of the night stopping 49 of 51 Boston shots! The Sens out-shot Boston 21-20 in the first 40 minutes but Boston turned it on to the tune of 27 3rd period shots(SIXTEEN in the last 5 minutes).....Talbot got 26 of em.

NICE follow up to the Boston win! Caps were 9-1-0 in their last ten and the young Sens fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 on the road despite doublin' em up on SOG's at the time but they're learning how to win. Outstanding 20yros Stutzle,Pinto and Sanderson are complemented beautifully by the 'Hockey stud' named Claude Giroux and Talbot might be the best GT they've had in years. Derick Brassard is an under the radar, league minimum signing off a PTO but he's apparently a good add on and off the ice.
Outshot the Caps 45-23 on the road, won 54% FO's,14 blocks,14 TKA'a and ZERO GVA's.......DJ had his boys up on the bit......
'El Gatto' is 'En Fuego' in December with 18pts and a NYE game left to add to it. SWEET dish from Pinto on D-Cat's game tyer with a 5:34 left and unbelievable steal and dish by 'G' for D-Cat's OT GWG.....
Sens youth movement is maturing quickly and their big brute of a 23yro captain leads that movement in every way.......
The youth movement on D was on display last night too with 25yro Chabot seeing almost 29mins after skating 31+ against Boston Tuesday night,20yro Sanderson seeing 22:44 and 23yro Benard-Docker returned to the lineup after a 20+ game injury to skate a solid 22:28 himself. This was necessary because 27yro #2 Zub was out(soon to return),much improved 23yro Brannstrom was out as well as #7 Zaitsez(no loss...LOL),excpet it drew-in what amounts to their #9,career AHL guy Heatherington to skate 7:52. Still a few, big, talented D-men in the pipeline too,22yro,6" 192lb,#19 overall,Finn Lassi Thompson is developing nicely in Belleville with 40pts in 68 AHL games from the back-end,18yro,6' 194lb,3rd round,Czech Hamara is starting for his country in the WJC and 18yro 6'2" 191lb Jorian Donovan has 25pts from Hamiton's blue-line in 28 games after a solid rookie OHL season.......nice find in the 5th round.
23yro,35 goal scorer Josh Norris is traveling with the team and should return in mid February and 25yro,two-time cup winner Joeseph is due back any day,as is dependable bottom-six Motte.
All the team's important players are wrapped up with the exception of Pinto, who'll get a nice 'bridge' and D-Cat,who I believe signs a fairly team friendly deal sooner than most think. He loves it up in 'Siberia'......even w/o Kaner......as do veterans Giroux and Talbot!
I now hope the Sens make NO move this year,go with their young squad and hang onto their 1st and 2nd in this deep draft.......they're not a legit cup challenger till next year anyway. I do see the possibility of a 'push' though, and that'll keep the fanbase engaged, along with a new barn and new ownership keeping them in Ottawa long-term.

Sens' last three were a OT loss to the Caps,a SO win against Boston and an OT win in Washington after trailing by two twice, the young team is now winning the close games they were losing earlier in the season.....even against good opponents.
9-3-2 in December with the struggling Wings on the 'docket' tonight.....a 22 point month would be just what the doctor ordered.
D-Cat had two primary helpers when the Sens ran the Wings over in Detroit a few seeks ago but Husso STONNED him twice point-blank......D-Cat gets his revenge on NYE.

Two huge wins in a row,go into Detroit and go up 2-0 after one and then.....remember it's New Year's Eve? Wangs are used to playing from behind, coming back to win in Pittsburgh after trailing 4-0 going into the 2nd last week...............lotsa ups and downs with a young team.

Give up three in a little under 2 minutes to blow a 2 goal lead on the road, spend NYE on a plane and come home and hold Buffalo to a single goal after they potted 10 in their last two games. The young team's learning.
Forsberg stopped 33 of 34 in his first start in two weeks and killing off 1:40 of a 3 on 5 always give any team a lift. The 20yro,point a game,German stallion,Tim Stutzle potted his 13th & 14th but it was his work on that 5 on 3 that was an eye-opener......
20yro Jake Sanderson is also a mainstay on the league's 8th best PK......leading all D-men in SH TOI last night. The league's 4th best PP scored on their only chance.
edit: Tage Thompson hit the post with an 87mph wrist-shot in that game.....in stride........a F'n 87mph WRIST-SHOT!!!

Really happy for DJ getting the team back on track. Stutzle looking like the real deal here. Maybe there’s a chance they trade Norris in the off-season and spend that money elsewhere? Like on some more D help? I’m not sure Stutzle will like stepping down a notch. I guess it’s a good problem to have!!!

When you look at the 23yro center's first two years the return would have to be huge,he followed-up a solid rookie year with 35/55 in 65 games as a 22yro and he's 52% at the dot for his career. The shoulder could be a concern though,he missed 16 games last year with it and most of this year after injuring it again on a FO. He's due back this month after rehab and PT vs surgery and his 7.9MX8 deal kicks-in next year. IF his injury problems are behind him,he could be an impact player and a rising cap would make that deal look good.......if not?

I’m looking at it from a point of view that the team will only get better. Stutzle is looking like the real deal here with a solid 200’ game. Very solid. The D will naturally get better with age. Especially Sanderson. That cap space for Norris I believe could be used to round out the roster and the team has a few kids that can also be plugged into the lineup. Their cupboards are still rather full. Plus they could get some picks and prospects back to build the cupboards up for the next inevitable purge. However if they keep him. He literally could be the missing piece too. Adding in a top Center is a massive advantage!!!

That’s good for any team. But especially the Sens. Good to see the attendance spike for them. They’re gonna be a tough ticket to get very soon. That team will keep getting better. The arena there is pretty decent. But they just put it like 45 mins outside of Ottawa. The good news is that the city has expanded out that way now and it’s looking like a better attraction. So even if they do build a new arena, this one will do for now. Hopefully Ryan Reynolds returns home to be the saviour for a few years!!!

Sens' goaltending had been a bright spot lately with Forsberg coming off a shutout and allowing 1 the start before that,he stopped 2 of the 5 he faced before Talbot, who's also played well lately stopped only 14 of the 19 he faced. EIGHT 5 on 5 goals allowed on 24 shots w/ a few softies......better have a short memory those two! Stutzle with his 2nd hattie of the year and the primary on Tkachuk's goal. I just don't know how many NHL players I'd entertain trading the outstanding 20yro for and Dorian going with a max-term deal over a bridge was brilliant IMO. senshot.com/2023/01/06/stutzle-showing-positive-impact-aspects-game/

Stutzle has been awesome. And more than likely a bargain at 8 million long term. Deals like that will get you more roster flexibility going forward. He’s the main reason I’d entertain trading Norris. Pinto has stepped up nicely, so they could have the 1/2 punch they need already. So I’m probably looking to keep Dcat, and it’s not gonna work paying Dcat, Norris, Tkachuk, Stutzle, Batherson, Chabot, Pinto and eventually Sanderson. Maybe the Hawks can take a run at Norris? A 23 year old big center is always needed on what the Hawks would consider a cap friendly deal. The Sens got a window of 2 maybe 3 years before the cap starts to squeeze. They’ve got a lot of talent there and it only took 4 years to get most of it!!!

Finally had a chance to watch Seattle for an entire game last Saturday and these boys look serious! I'm not saying that cause they hung 8(7 5 on 5) on the Sens but the Sens had only allowed one in their last two starts going into that game. Their six game 'heater' includes a perfect 5-0-0 road trip so far and extending that streak in Boston tomorrow night wouldn't surprise me one bit.

What’s the Sens cap space like? Can they add to the roster if needed? Maybe KD can float a call in!!! Even with Noris and Joseph's money activated, that leaves 7.1M with Zub & Motte 3.85M combined both due back soon leaving 3.25M at that point. If the Hawks were willing to pick-up Zaitsev's 4.5M this year and next, they might get a nice haul.......the Sens have their 1st and 2nd this year and next. Some good prospects too. They'd have to improve by leaps and bounds 5 on 5 to make a serious run at a spot and I don't see the goaltending necessary for a serious run and they still need a D-man from what I've seen of em. They swim in a tough pond out east and even a nice 10 game over 2nd half gives em 90pts and barely a sniff BUT that finish would keep the faithful engaged.....it'e been a good atmosphere. IMO,they're better served hanging onto those picks in this year's deep draft and most of their prospects too,let those kids learn and gel the rest of this year and make moves for a D-man and GT this summer.

Gotta go back to Forseberg. Commming off of 'heeling' a puck right to a StLou forward for the GWG sees Talbot give-up two awful goals and two other softies on only 19 shots but the Sens went 4 for 9 on the PP.....two were double minors.

I would have to think with those cap numbers. Zaitsev has to move regardless. I don’t see the logic in keeping him when Dcat is due 9 million next year. I don’t think the Sens are in a position for a rental. I say wait it out. Next year the demographics could be much much different. For example. The Bruins could be a shell of this year. Bergeron could retire. Pasta could easily land elsewhere with his salary demands. The Bolts are due for a decline at some point soon. And the Leaves. The Leaves are already in decline if you ask me. If Mathews doesn’t re-sign with the team this summer. Gotta heavily look at moving him now for some assets to keep life moving. Anaheim would probably give up some decent pieces for him. Or even LA.
So I believe that Atlantic will be wide open in a year. The good news for the Sens is that they have proven that they have the players. Now it’s just to get off to a better start. They were last in the NHL for a while there.
I think they should move out Zaitsev even for a prospect and a 2nd rounder. Shore up the tending. Then sit tight and just let the team gel. They’ll be top of the mark next year!!!

Unless he's part of a bigger deal but I don't see em as buyers this season.......maybe another active summer though. Interesting point about the Atlantic, the Panthers are only 2 over and their top players are putting up their points too so they could also go backwards with their cap problems and the Sens should be on the come as their young guys develop and gel but their FO still has a little work to do. Buffalo and Detroit should also be improving and like Ott,their FO's still have a little work to do too. DeBrincat's due 9M if they have to QO but if we see a re-do before hand,I honestly believe it'll be south of 9M and maybe less than max term too. The captain makes 8.2M and Stutzle just signed for 8.3M. If he likes it there as much as it seems,I could see 8.5MX5.

He’ll make well over 100 million. That’s not bad for a guy of his caliber. Maybe McDavid or Mathews you’d think. But definitely not Huberdeau. Mathews is another. He’ll be 26 at his contract ending. He’ll command a massive haul for 8 years. Very smart. I could see Dcat doing a 4 year deal and still sign another huge ticket in his late 20s!!!

At the time the league made it sound like a big increase, 3 mil, the next season. But then walked it back saying over the next few years. Which basically the same 1 mill increase each year as usual. I think the league is over estimating their growth at this point.

Daly has promised a lot on cap increases……… I have to think the Sens may have superseded the cap. They were smart by paying a lot now to have flexibility later. Stutzle is an absolute bargain. So is Tkachuk. If the cap goes up by even 5 million in the next few years. They’ll be able to keep their team together. And more than likely add to it. Dorion seems like a good hockey mind, hopefully the Sens keep spending so he can see this through. The ownership has been shaky since the start. They’ve cut back way too many times. It’d be nice to see solid new owners in there that allow the GM to actually go for it!!!
