And they were all 3rd period saves, a rare thing latel. Last game I got to myself....Seabs' 1,000th also! Very cool. Four years and if you looked at the box score on that one, only four current players played, Kane and Dcat at forward (Toews must have been hurt) Murphy and Gus on defence, and of course Delia in net. How things change. What will the next four years bring? Will anybody be left from this team?

I recall it poorly, cuz I had to listen to that one on the phone while I flew to Denver. took my sister, nephew, brother in law and the special lady to the Avs game the next night to watch the boys get whooped on, so I do recall there being a bunch of guys out for that one. I wore my Seabs sweater. 😎

absolutely my favorite goal by a guy not wearing the indian head and it's not even close.
that was bickell's only shootout goal. he had just one attempt in chicago and missed. i used to lament back in the day why they never used him more in the shootout while he played for chicago? he played in 58 games that required a shootout with chicago and was used just once. too much talent ahead of him i guess but his wrister was one of the team's league's best. i remember the game before was the last game of the season in raleigh and they had a shootout in that game as well. i was a bit miffed brindamour didn't use bickell then. anyways, talk about ending it in style...it always gives me goosebumps watching this goal.
edit: i had a hunch i might've posted this on these boards already and i was right (in a gdt over 2 years ago). but i might as well leave this up anyways just for that lovely *ping* when the puck hits the post. and who else uses a wrister on a shootout from just inside the top of the circle?

i gotta' admit i thought the tradition started at the ASG during the gulf war. I remember it very well. During the decade+ years of when I had season tickets.

I never had season tickets but went to several games in the Stadium and the anthem crowd noise was definitely the loudest I have ever been part of. Still somewhat loud at the much larger UC but not at the old level. You would have to squeeze 40,000 fans into the UC to get the same effect.

Notice the lack of playoff beards. Nice catch. I also had a chuckle about winning eleven in a row, a record Pittsburgh beat after sweeping the Hawks in the next series.

Nope. Still can't watch any of those games. 71 & 73 finals still give me nervous twitches in my left eye. I had so much scar tissue after '71',I didn't let '73' hit me nearly as hard. Hawks didn't even extend the Habs in the finals that year and I was so SORE over letting Bobby Hull leave,I figured they deserved to lose. Hang unto Phil and Bobby for a few more years and the Hawks could have been a dynasty in the early 70's.....they had the goaltender too.

In Boston Phil benefited from playing with two wingers who controlled the corners (which we lacked) and threatened Phil with violence if he left the front of the net where he scored most of his goals. Other times he won the faceoff to Orr and Orr did the rest. It would be great if we had a player with that much net front presence.

Yeah 50 goal seasons will make you better but the Hawks of the early-mid 70's were real good and real close....... 70,lost in the conference finals 71,lost in the SCF 72,lost in the conference final. 73,lost in the SCF.....again........w/o Bobby and Phil 74,lost in the conference final It's hard to believe Esposito dosen't put the team over top at least twice in that span........the team had the goaltending......the late, great Tony-O. Phil Esposito was a postseason beast with as much snarl as talent and he had a TON of talent,he was a prolific goal scorer but he retired with more assists than goals and nobody'll tell ya that more than Orr himself.

It is shame that no cups with those teams, real close like you said. Phil Esposito on those teams probably 2 to 3 cups easy.

happy national doughnut day to one and all. (i checked, there really is a national doughnut day and it's today)
the story behind the altercation between don koharski and jim schoenfeld is from schoenfeld's wiki page.
Schoenfeld is remembered for an altercation with NHL referee Don Koharski after game 3 of the 1988 Wales Conference Finals after his New Jersey Devils lost 6–1 to the Boston Bruins. During the argument Koharski fell down and accused Schoenfeld of pushing him. As people yelled at Schoenfeld, at least one saying "you're done", believing that he'd pushed Koharski, Schoenfeld continued arguing with Koharski who said he hoped that the entire exchange was on videotape. Schoenfeld yelled back, "Good, 'cause you fell, you fat pig! Have another doughnut! Have another doughnut!" as Koharski and the other officials headed to their dressing room. Schoenfeld was suspended by League disciplinarian Brian O'Neill for the following game, but the Devils sought a court order to overturn the suspension. About 40 minutes before the start of the game, New Jersey Superior Court Judge James F. Madden issued a restraining order allowing Schoenfeld to coach, subsequently triggering a walkout by the scheduled game 4 officials: referee Dave Newell and linesmen Gord Broseker and Ray Scapinello. After more than an hour's delay, three local off-ice officials – Paul McInnis, Jim Sullivan and Vin Godleski – were tracked down to work the game. The Devils went on to win the game by a score of 3–1, but Schoenfeld was later suspended for game 5, fined $1,000, his team $10,000, and the officials returned to work.

amazing photo of gump worsley.
what's amazing is that it's a bottle of ginger ale and not a molson's stubby.
back in the late 70's i was at a brandon wheat kings game. on the crowded concourse between periods, i briefly rubbed shoulders with a short chubby guy in a suit and trenchcoat with a briefcase and a crew cut. i thought to myself that i was almost sure it was the gumper. in later years when the internet came to be i googled gump's name and sure enough he did a ton of scouting when his playing days were over so i'm sure it was him.
another one of my many brushes with greatness...
