amazing photo of gump worsley. what's amazing is that it's a bottle of ginger ale and not a molson's stubby. back in the late 70's i was at a brandon wheat kings game. on the crowded concourse between periods, i briefly rubbed shoulders with a short chubby guy in a suit and trenchcoat with a briefcase and a crew cut. i thought to myself that i was almost sure it was the gumper. in later years when the internet came to be i googled gump's name and sure enough he did a ton of scouting when his playing days were over so i'm sure it was him. another one of my many brushes with greatness... I got the same ashtray.

I remember as a kid going to the old barn, Windsor arena. We’re talking back in the mid to late 80s. People couldn’t smoke in the stands, but you could in the hallways. And the smoke will billow in to the stands anyways. They finally got a beer room in there I’m not joking it was literally 40’x50’ with an 8’ ceiling. In the 90s that was the only place they allowed smoking. So the place was gawd awful for smoke. Once I was 19 we’d hang in there, but it got tough and I’d grab 2 beers and head back to the stands. But there was no liquor licence for the stands. Just had to be smart about it. They only sold a few types of beer, and I’d always get Windsors two favourite letters OV. Anyone here (GT) ever drink OV? It’s glorious. And from what I hear and see. No where else really sells OV. Mainly just in Windsor and Essex county.
What a different society we live in now. Can’t believe what used to be normal!!!

Can’t believe what used to be normal!!! oh...i've had a few OVs in my youth. i'd drink anything i could get my mitts on. i had good memories of OV. smoking rooms like you mentioned were a big factor in me quitting smoking. if i recall...the airport smoking rooms in hong kong and any airport in india were the worst. maybe 15X15 ft., stinking like a wet ashtray and stained brown from nicotine..... jam packed with old smokers with puffy yellow eyes smoking and coughing. i told myself i was just as bad as them...or i would be soon.

My buddy from Auburn, NY used to bring cases of OV to tailgate parties - had more than my share years ago. So it was available (and may still be) available in the States.

such a humble beginning.
tim horton died in a car crash during a high speed chase while he was allegedly intoxicated. even though he opened his first shop about 10 years before his death, i would've thought having that attached to your name would be bad for business. apparently not.
i know for a fact there's at least one tim horton's in bangkok, there's one in the same building as the canadian embassy.
edit: the kid was ripped.
i'd be curious how many kids if any show up to the combine looking like this?

not to take anything away from lindros. he would've been an all time great except for those damn concussions.
but can you imagine giving up that much for one player? if i was the flyer's g.m., i wouldn't have the gonads to make that trade.

Lindros was damn good for a bit, but the Nordiques won that trade in a big way... 2 Cups vs 0 Cups is a L for Philly...

Usher? Looks more like a navy admiral or a TWA pilot. Andy Frain Ushers. They used to check your tickets and usher you to your seats. They worked just about every venue in the Chicagoland area and beyond. Some Andy Frain also were security and carried guns.

I zoomed in and saw Prager beer had been confiscated. Never heard of it. Was/is it a local brand? Just curious.

I had never heard of Prager beer either but after looking it up sure enough it had a run for a while locally and the name apparently is still in use as part of a microbrewery. The two brands I most associate with my younger days around Chicagoland were Hamm’s and Old Style. They seem to have been squeezed out lately between the big guys and the micros. My mouth still waters as I picture an ice cold 16 oz Old Style on a 95 degree summer day!

Pretty sure i recall lloyd pettit doing hamm's commercials back when he did the hawks' games back in the day.

Interesting list of players with lengthy NHL careers. A bit surprised a D-man leads in all-time shots. But if someone quizzed me on what D-man has the most shots in NHL history he would be one I may have guessed.

With Strome's ability to win draws,he should see the PP time in Washington that he rarely if ever saw here and the numbers to match. I felt vindicated in my support for the kid throughout his time here by his play when given the opportunity last year(as he did his first here) and the Caps got younger at forward w/o giving up a single asset, got a value deal and apparently negotiated back in a year of RFA status,so they can keep him fairly cheap again next year or flip his RFA rights in the offseason for a good return if he has two good seasons in a row. I still see little risk in the Hawks doing the same for the 3.6M QO amount,it looks like Kane's stayin' till at least the TDL,let Strome center him,put up decent offensive and FO numbers and flip him for a 2nd in a deep draft at the TDL........gotta pay somebody as we now see lesser players signing for like amounts here. Maybe inconsistent effort/motivation brought on the many healthy scratches here as some say and maybe it's the reverse. Why does a kid with a constant smile on his face(like his best friend D-Cat),who never said the wrong thing throughout some though times AND injuries, escape AZ,light it up with his smiling best friend, pracrtice with him and Kane in anticipation of a killer line the following year report with a bad attitude? Dylan Strome will play for his first real NHL HC next season and that HC will realize his upside and his downside and use them to his and the team's advantage. I believe the player had a breakthrough,he'll either prove me right or wrong and he'll do it next year.

I believe the player had a breakthrough,he'll either prove me right or wrong and he'll do it next year. as was discussed somewhere here, with the cap's backstrom out, there's a good chance he'll exceed the pp time he had in chicago but he did get his fair share here. since his first season in 18/19, his 2:52 minutes average pp time per game played ranks second among chicago centers, only trailing jonny's 3:06 minutes. league wide since 18/19 among centers, strome's 2:52 ranks 33rd (minimum 100 games played). among forwards since 18/19 you got kane at 3:46, d-cat at 3:31, jonny at 3:06, strome at 2:52, kubalik at 1:58 and dach at 1:56. even this last season his TOI on the PP was tied with jonny for most on the team among centers. (2:42 minutes average each) definitely looking forward to seeing how strome and dach perform on their new teams. d-cat not so much (for me at least). i know he will do fine in ottawa...strome and dach have something to prove. at least if the on ice product in chicago isn't quite up to snuff, there'll be plenty to watch on other teams.

But if someone quizzed me on what D-man has the most shots in NHL history he would be one I may have guessed. i've already posted this somewhere here but since 1959 when they started recording shots, ray bourque holds the nhl record for shots on goal in one game with 19. in second place is a tie between the ranger's rod gilbert and a fellow named marian hossa who tallied 16 shots on goal. (hoss did his with the thrashers) the hawks record is 14 shots...held by ed litzenberger. second best is 13 shots shared by bobby hull (4X) and by mikita, sharp and kane (1X each).

He did get more PP time then I recall(1/3 of his points last year actually)but most was 2nd unit,he was the only center besides JT who could in a draw and Tyler Johnson got hurt too.
