ah, I missed that one apparently. that's too bad. if he doesn't grow into the job here soon, I hope they move on sooner rather than later... granada mentioned it in the "broadcasting crew" thread and i saw the other day on twitter that greg boysen said it as well so i'd say it's true. edit: here's where he said it. right on. I wonder how long it will for the fan complaints to finally register with those in charge. I'm guessing they'll care more once the team starts looks better on the ice.

They might extend vosters thinking that the t.v. broadcast is that bad he's driving up ticket sales. : ) I thought he improved this last season compared to the one before but not sure very many here would agree. Idk how long his contract is. Any idea? I doubt they'd can him before his deal ended. I'll look around some more and see if I can find out.

the Athletic released their broadcast rankings (as voted on by the fans). the Blackhawks broadcast jumped up the rankings to 31, up from dead last in 22-23... lol. unsurprisingly, Vosters was reason numero uno for the poor ranking... maybe the rebuild should include rebuilding the broadcast crew as well. I wonder if we get a new crew with the new network? It took me a few years to warm up to Foley. Never thought anyone could replace Lloyd.

Hey Vader, just guessing here but the new channel might bring changes to Pre/Post/Intermission crew. Boyle is probably going to jump ship from NBCSN-Chicago as it most likely will not be around anymore or for much longer anyway -- but that's assuming the new channel wants him. I think they would, but I guess you never know. So Caley, John Scott, Tony Granato, Charlie Roumeliotis -- you might see change there. This new channel thing is really starting to agitate me (shocking, I know, lol). I hate Comcast/Xfinity, but that's what I have. I'm not interested in switching services and there are features about Comcast I enjoy (on demand, all apps in one place essentially, etc). Who knows if the new channel will be offered on there; if it's not, or if I have buy another stream, or if it ups my existing and already-too-high Comcast bill, I might just say fuck it and just be done with the NHL. But we'll see how long that stance lasts. I know with Marquee, they didn't strike a deal with Comcast until zero hour. I didn't give a shit either way because it's Baseball, but it does show that Comcast is not easy to negotiate with. EDIT: never mind, the article seems to indicate it'll be on Comcast and if I'm understanding right, available with an antenna? "The network will launch with agreements in place with traditional cable providers, streaming services and be available via free, over-the-air broadcast." www.nhl.com/blackhawks/news/release-chicago-sports-network-to-launch-as-new-home-for-blackhawks-bulls-and-white-sox

Yeah Boyle just confirmed on a podcast that NBC Sports Chicago will shut down September 30th. Kinda saw this coming with the all the firings and canceled shows in recent years (Kaplan, Rahimi, Schanowski, etc.). It reminds me of when good ol' Sportschannel went off the air in the 90's. Maybe this new channel will revive some old shows, like a Chicago Tribune Live sort of show. I wouldn't mind seeing those dedicated Chicago-Sports recap shows come back too; they were usually on around 10-ish during the week with guys like Mark Schanowski, etc. I do hope they get rid of those stupid podcast shows like Bears Under Center, etc. Go back to the classic format and have on guys from the Score and/or the newspapers, etc. and quit trying to appeal to a younger base with this crap. Yeah I never had a problem with Boyle, I'd be shocked if he isn't brought on. Roumeliotis -- he's blah; he's not bad, but he's replaceable in my book, doesn't really offer anything special. Will be interesting to see if they bring on Scott and/or Granato. They're both fine, but neither hold a candle to Mayers. I know Roenick gets a bad rap these days, but I'd love it if he was brought on. www.nbcsportschicago.com/nhl/chicago-blackhawks/podcast-reflecting-on-blackhawks-memories-during-nbc-sports-chicagos-20-year-run/567226/

Man, I hope they keep Boyle around. I think he does a good job. But please get rid of Vosters. According to the Athletic Chris Vosters is out and Rick Ball is the new play by play TV voice. Ball spent the last 10 years as the TV play by play for Calgary Flames. He has also worked for "Hockey Night in Canada" and called games for Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and the WHL Kelowna Rockets.

According to Jamie Faulkner, now that the booth has been set, our attention and focus will be on the studio with an emphasis on hockey knowledge, some connection to the Blackhawks is very important along with energy.

To our Canadian posters any insight or opinion on Ball?

Faulkner went on to say that they after each season they evaluate the broadcast talent, based on their own evaluations, feedback from key stakeholders and partners a change was needed. She must have been reading our board and posts!
Edit: For the record I did not have a big issue with Vosters, he got better, he was no Foley or Petit, but who is or could be after just 2 years at the helm. Good luck to Ball and look forward to hearing some great calls from him soon.

NO SHIT?? Wow, this is fantastic, but who is Rick Ball? Why can't they just give it to John and Troy? At least Vosters is out. I'm sorry, I know that's harsh, but he was terrible and did not know the sport. I knew him and Pang didn't get along. Not sure if I mentioned that here or on that other board: chicago.suntimes.com/sports-media/2024/06/06/blackhawks-replace-chris-vosters-after-change-of-heart-strained-relationship-with-darren-pang

I'll take it! guess I hijacked this thread and should've brought this up in the broadcast thread. regardless, it is absolutely hilarious to me that that article came out this morning and this afternoon they already replaced Vosters. clearly this was already in the works. good on the brass to listen to the fans...

moved 22 posts from "bits and bobs" to here. anyhoo...a bit surprised they made this move but it had to be done. safe to say someone keeps one eye on social media. It’s a stunning turn for the Hawks, who anointed Vosters as the successor to Hockey Hall of Famer Pat Foley in April 2022 after an in-season competition among candidates that left fans fuming because of the inconsistency in the booth. Though Vosters hadn’t had a regular job calling hockey, the Hawks thought he was the answer.
Vosters improved in his two seasons, but fan reaction on social media was often critical. It didn’t help that he called teams that finished with the third- and second-worst records in the NHL, leaving fans with negative feelings.
But in Vosters’ first season with Pang, the longtime analyst and former Hawks goalie, sources say the two didn’t mesh. The team became unhappy with Vosters’ broadcasting and took fan feedback seriously.
Ball has a wealth of experience calling hockey. In addition to calling Flames games on Sportsnet, he has called play-by-play for national broadcasts of “Hockey Night in Canada” since 2011 and has been the show’s western-based announcer since 2013. chicago.suntimes.com/sports-media/2024/06/06/blackhawks-replace-chris-vosters-after-change-of-heart-strained-relationship-with-darren-pang

Ball and Pang have known each other long time and Ball cited Pang as a reason he took the job. hopefully that will make for a more cohesive broadcast.
it'll also be nice to hear someone who actually sounds excited when the 'hawks score...

From what I hear around cyberspace there are some Flames fans sad to see him go. some quotes from various posts on the flame's section over at hfboards. "This absolutely f***ing blows. Massive loss for this market and the team."
"Brutal. The hits just keep on coming."
"Terrible news."
"He was the best PBP SN had IMO.
"Devastating news. He represented us really well through some brutal stretches of hockey"
forums.hfboards.com/threads/rick-ball-leaving-to-join-chicago-blackhawks-broadcast.2968337/you can maybe sense the disappointment. : ) one reply said he likely wanted out because he didn't get to do playoff games which makes me wonder if the new sports station means that one day in the future, we can watch blackhawks' play by play guys do blackhawks' playoff games.

And I find that a damn good thing.

There are plenty of examples of broadcasters leaving Chicago to become broadcast HOFers. God-speed, young man. Learn from this - Brent Musberger never REALLY caught on here (memory tells me that he was doing weekend sports in Chicago at one point).

For the record I did not have a big issue with Vosters, he got better, he was no Foley or Petit, but who is or could be after just 2 years at the helm. currently listen to CHGO's podcast on YT. i don't watch them much anymore but i wanted to see this one. not his biggest fan but greg boysen basically said that if vosters had started play by play with seattle in their first season, people would've loved him. maybe...maybe not. but starting his nhl broadcasting career at his relatively young age in a proven hockey market with proven hockey fans and replacing pat foley to boot? lamb to a slaughter might be a bit extreme but he was in a bad spot from the get-go.

Guess that we won't hear about the blue LINE anymore!

All in all, Vosters voice didn’t bother me. It was his knowledge. I said this before. When Foley called a game. Or even someone like Chris Cuthbert. I don’t even have to watch. I listen and they paint a picture of what’s happening. I actually enjoy listening to the game on tv. As weird as that sounds. When I hear the excitement in their voice, I look up. Sometimes I have to work, so I’m on my phone doing a ton of things. So I listen to games. One of the best I’ve ever heard is the Spitfires play by play on the radio Steve Bell. He’s amazing and a great dude. He’s been doing it for 35 years. He’s probably 62 now. And I don’t think he’ll stop until he’s dead!!!

And on the Hawks front page announcement they misspelled Pang's name, "Peng".
