And on the Hawks front page announcement they misspelled Pang's name, "Peng". Ya, but that might be his non union Mongolian equivalent!!!

For the record I did not have a big issue with Vosters, he got better, he was no Foley or Petit, but who is or could be after just 2 years at the helm. currently listen to CHGO's podcast on YT. i don't watch them much anymore but i wanted to see this one. not his biggest fan but greg boysen basically said that if vosters had started play by play with seattle in their first season, people would've loved him. maybe...maybe not. but starting his nhl broadcasting career at his relatively young age in a proven hockey market with proven hockey fans and replacing pat foley to boot? lamb to a slaughter might be a bit extreme but he was in a bad spot from the get-go. Lol at that opinion (bolded). That's a copout. This is why I don't watch them anymore, for garbage takes like this. Vosters was bad on many, many levels. His style was frantic in the sense that, he never knew when to shut up. His cadence was terrible -- similar to all the ESPN play-by-play guys -- in that he didn't understand the game enough to elicit excitement when he should, be it a great save, a great pass, etc. He only knew to raise his voice for a goal. He missed everything with regard to penalties and what was happening behind the play because the game was too fast for him. His humor was awkward. He didn't know what icing was, at least on many occasions. His hockey terminology was extremely lacking. People keep saying he improved -- honestly, I didn't see much improvement over the 2 years. All these issues I were constant. This was a major screwup by the organization, to have this big try-out during the season, only to fire the guy two years later. I'm glad they essentially admitted their mistake, but it worries me that more are to come when they screw up something this simple. It is still a massive mistake to not promote John and Troy. Instead of listening to the fans back then, they completely shit the bed while not only hiring Vosters, but losing (in my view) the best analyst in the league in Olczyk. Ball is welcomed but he's a consolation. This all could have been avoided had the org listened to the fans in the first fucking place.

Based on our own evaluations, as well as feedback from key stakeholders and partners, we felt we need to make a change in this role." If we know our fans value a deep hockey knowledge and experience, why hire a guy with none? I wasn't the guy's biggest critic and I didn't mind his voice, but his lack of familiarity with hockey and it's terms and phrases put him in a tough spot IMO......that's on management. Maybe Voster's background is better suited for other sports, maybe he would have benefited from calling AHL games for some time and maybe having a team-first,loyal as hell Edzo in the booth with him woulda helped too. Edzo seems more patient and nurturing,Troy and Sharp both seemed to bristle at Vosters lack of hockey acumen last year and it sounds like Pang also did this year. I still suspect he's much better suited for other sports. The youngest owner, front office and GM in hockey are allowed a few mis-steps,but enough 'outside the box' thinking already! I'm not sure what replacing Pat and Edzo with a young announcer w/o a shred of experience calling hockey games tells us.

Sure, Danny probably had some say, but I'd also venture to guess that he wanted to give Faulkner some autonomy here. So you have a newbie PO making a newbie mistake by hiring a newbie announcer. It's just a rumor, but it makes sense. But yeah, her and/or the org's desire to "appeal to a younger fan base" misfired horrifically with hires like Vosters and Colby. I just hope they learned their lesson. If the only reason Vosters was hired was the sound of his voice, that's unforgiveable in my view. I mean I agree, the guy's voice in and of itself isn't horribly sounding, but hiring the guy based on that is like buying a very nice looking used-car that's been in 40 wrecks before being remodeled.

Actually sounds like the Hawks radio play by play announcer John Wiedeman.
Guess that we won't hear about the blue LINE anymore!
All in all, Vosters voice didn’t bother me. It was his knowledge. I said this before. When Foley called a game. Or even someone like Chris Cuthbert. I don’t even have to watch. I listen and they paint a picture of what’s happening. I actually enjoy listening to the game on tv. As weird as that sounds. When I hear the excitement in their voice, I look up. Sometimes I have to work, so I’m on my phone doing a ton of things. So I listen to games. One of the best I’ve ever heard is the Spitfires play by play on the radio Steve Bell. He’s amazing and a great dude. He’s been doing it for 35 years. He’s probably 62 now. And I don’t think he’ll stop until he’s dead!!! Yep. It's like Vosters just wasn't picking stuff up quickly. He may have gotten marginally better, but it was still sounding amateurish. To be fair to him, if he was calling a sport he knew, or if he put his nose to the grindstone and actually learned hockey, he would be good. P.S. Weiderman can also paint a picture. The times I'm driving and listening to the game on the radio he and Troy definitely paint a picture.

But really, if I was in Vosters' shoes, the minute I got hired I'd be going to school learning the game and how the greats called it, all while developing my own style of course. in my opinion his knowledge didn't get that much better and he kinda stagnated.

The youngest owner in the league's background was the liquor business, and he was successful but 'Breakthrough Berverage' still has the same exclusive distributor business 'Jugde and Dolf' had and Hockey's a different business all together. Jamie Faulkner also has to be one of the youngest Presidents in the league, she's also been successful but also mainly not at hockey,I believe much like her husband Cub's Ex VP of sales/Mkg Colin Faulkner, her background's also been mainly MLB. After watching the Hawks interview Cubs AGM Greenberg for the GM spot and then hire him as a AGM suggests the lack of a hockey background isn't a disqualifier for the team's hocky management. I'm actually surprised they didn't poach somebody from the Cubs booth......or another MLB team.

Hiring Greenberg as the assistant GM was a smart move to help set up the analytics department, he was a numbers guy so not having a hockey background didn't matter. Maciver, Eaton, and Campbell add hockey background to the front office. And Luke has a little bit of a background.

Maciver, Eaton, and Campbell add hockey background to the front office. And Luke has a little bit of a background. Are there any similarities what soever between hockey analytics and baseball analytics? How close were they to actually hiring an NBA GM last time? They interviewed one for some 'outside the box' reason. Jr's only two superiors in the entire Org are Danny(liquor background) and Jaime Faulkner who also has a BB background like her husband the Pres of marketing for the Cubs. With ZERO hockey insight coming from above,Jr will have to rely on those under him for input. I commended bringing back Maciver but he's one of the rare experienced, hockey men in the Org,Eaton and Campbell both played but both are young for the positions they're in for the first time. Luke is the proverbial 'dried in the wool' hockey guy(the other one in the Org)but, how much will that matter if the team continues to occupy the league's cellar? I can all but guarantee the millennials in charge will kick his 'dried in the wool',experienced hockey ass to the curb at the first sign of trouble. Hire the next HC from another sport? Hiring a young play-by-play guy who's never called a hockey game in his life to replace a legendary combo should surprise no one with mgnt's track record. They only hired the new guy due to fan-base uproar. Other team's websites show an entire page of executives, owner(s),Boards of Governors,CEO/Presidents and Presidents of Hockey Opps,we got Danny and Jaime.....that's it. When the NHL Board of Governors meets,it's Jaime Faulkner who represents the team in ALL hockey/league related matters because it has the be an executive and she's the only other one besides Prince Daniel........in the entire Org. How much influence will THEY have on the young, first time GM when the most important decisions are made? Danny recently stated he hired a new CEO for 'Breakthrough Beverage' so he could concentrate on 'running' the team,he WILL be involved!

I guess I'm not completely surprised that Vosters hasn't really said anything about the firing up to this point, but then again, I do find it a little curious. Seems like it's standard procedure nowadays to tweet a thank-you message, sort of like what Cohen did. I'm sure he's trying to figure things out and maybe he's holding off because there is some truth to the rumor that he might get a gig on the new sports channel as a studio guy. That or maybe he just doesn't care to address the Blackhawks fans because of the negativity he received in the role. Guess we'll see. I hate to pile on, but I hope he doesn't get hired as a studio guy -- because a studio guy who doesn't know hockey can be almost as annoying (see Chris Boden). Plus, I think it would be good for the guy to just start fresh, or go back to his roots with Baseball or whatever the hell sport he was doing before. I won't miss him, but I hope he lands somewhere in another sport, I think he will.
I have to wonder if it was also Faulkner who fucked up the whole Olczyk thing as well. If so, I really do think she should be fired, but not holding my breath there. Edzo was goofy but I still believe he's the best color guy in the business; hometown kid too to boot. Who knows, maybe Vosters would have been tolerable with Olczyk there. Pang is just okay compared to Olczyk.

Yeah, Vosters seems like a nice guy, it just was never a good fit from the jump and a completely botched hire by the organization, who lost Olczyk in the process. The person least at fault here is Vosters, the organization put him in a position to fail and hired him strictly based on appealing to a younger crowd instead of what should have been their main priority: hockey knowledge.

I don’t believe it was ever a job for Foley. He even went and called AHL games because he loved it. That is why Foley is one of the best ever. If not the best. I don’t think Vosters had a love for the game. Maybe a love for his job? But Foley did it for minimal money just to do it. I hope the org doesn’t try the same thing with the on ice product. You’ll never duplicate someone else’s success!!!

I give this to Vosters: at least he was trying to love the game; he just never got there and I'm not sure if he ever could. That's more than I can say about all the ESPN guys, especially McDonough, who just goes through the motions. Maybe Bob Wichusin is the exception as far as ESPN goes; I still for the life of me can't believe they choose to go with the former over him.

The best sports announcers recognize that the viewers are primarily interested in the game, not them. The good ones only mildly attempt to entertain us. Their primary job is to provide us with information we might not know and stay for the most part out of the spotlight.
When tv sports personalities demand attention (especially the play-by-play guys), it rubs the hard-core fan the wrong way. We don't want or need the corny jokes or silly props. I find the endless "signature calls" especially tiring.
Foley came from a radio background. He respected the boundaries.

If they’re a good announcer, I’ll only look up for the replay. I fully enjoy the play by play. Bob Cole was the best ever in my view. I used to love Dave Straders call. He was great, especially after he left the Wings. Bahl is very good too. Chris Cuthbert, even Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond I adore. They call a good game. Wings or not. There’s a lot more I’m not remembering. But for the most part, hockey has a good crew of announcers. I love watching games. One last thing….. again. One of my all time favourites is Steve Bell for the Spitfires. He’s a good dude and Calls an awesome game, usually all by himself. He’s more of the radio guy. He did TV for a bit. He’s an absolute beauty!!!

The best sports announcers recognize that the viewers are primarily interested in the game, not them. The good ones only mildly attempt to entertain us. Their primary job is to provide us with information we might not know and stay for the most part out of the spotlight. Your point is also why Colby Cohen failed. I do have to add that the best in the business are able to give their insight while being entertaining--and presenting it in an entertaining way rather than sounding flat: See also: and

Yeah I mentioned this a couple weeks ago a few posts above. I was surprised he hadn't released a statement at all, at least acknowledging what happened, if not thanking the fans, etc. Even Colby released a statement, maybe the circumstances were different, but I always assumed Colby was let go and was just trying to spin it ("I'm choosing to go back home/East," etc.) -- either way, he did post a statement on social media, as is the norm. Seems like Vosters is very bitter. Can't say I blame him. Nobody was harder on the guy than me, but I do feel for him. Not sure if it's the greatest look to not say at least something about it, if only to look professional. Maybe he will, but I'm surprised he hasn't by now.
