Kevin Hayes to Pittsburgh I wish teams would quit helping the blows out of their shitty contracts. hopefully no one takes any of their awful dman deals. them having to give up a 2nd makes me feel a little better, though.

There’s charts out there that show the amount from every round that make it. I believe overall 20% of picks make the NHL. The 1st round is obviously the best at 50%. I believe the 2nd round is somewhere around 25%. So just looking at stats, I believe the Hawks will have some who won’t make it that people thought would. It’s just the nature of things. Only so many spots available. My worry is the top end forward talent just isn’t anywhere near the level it needs to be. Take out Bedard. You basically got a ton of middle 6 players. Which is exactly what Nashville is. They have their one star in Forsberg (which they never drafted). Then they fill out the roster with great skaters, hardest workers etc. but always lack size, and that top end skill to get them into the playoffs. Right now I don’t see a true #1 center on the Hawks. I believe Bedard will be a winger. Yet there’s an abundance of Dmen, yet they ignore that again. To get that true big #1 centerman is gonna cost a lot!!! Ok T, going with what you just said, The Hawks should’ve drafted Lidstrome as the number #2, I read from Pierre Lebrun the Hawks offered Columbus there first round pick next season unprotected plus another draft pick for there number 4. I clearly felt the Hawks did t need to draft Arty with the number of prospects they have in the system, yes it always great to have plenty to choose from, and defenders take more time to develop. There were a lot of defenders in the second round, and with the picks given away the Hawks could of had there RHD, Arty is not a definite and neither is anyone else. However, you spoke of players playing Center, Demidov is t a Centermen and you wanted the Hawks to draft him, did you not? I’ve stated many many times that Cayden Lindstrom would be my pick. In the case of Demidov or Levshunov, I take Demidov!!!

I hope to feel more enthusiastic about this draft over the next days and weeks as the disappointment of passing on a potential superstar recedes. Maybe it is a Bedard effect from last draft when we got the belle of the ball and every other pick was frosting on top which makes this draft seem drab and underwhelming. When your first step is a misstep every step thereafter is off the mark and that's the way it seems to me. Where last year I was filled with enthusiasm for Moore/Gajan/Kantserov/Misiak/Lardis - this year I have none of it for any of the picks. Hopefully time clears the fog. have you read about how they apparently very much tried to get both? that might make you feel a little better. I wanted Demidov over Levshunov as well, but there was no wayyyyy Doneghey was getting over ruled by KfC on that one, imo. he clearly has a throbber for Arty... if you were excited about the players taken after Bedard last draft, you should be just as excited about the ones taken this year, lots of speed and lots of hard work!

But not all those righties have elite skating to go with offense and size, and a guys character has to be taken into consideration as well. He'll be a stud on D for many years. Demidov was very intriguing but to much uncertainty. Lindstrom has 1C potential but a herniated disc is a big red flag. So I like this pick. I don’t think it’s a question of if Arty will be good or not, I think it’s more of a question of how the Hawks should be prioritizing the need for better offense. Bedard can’t carry this team on his own. The feeling was Reichel was going to be a lot better than what he was last season, Nazar, it’s to early to tell, Moore, it will be a few years before we see anything, so what does or star forward have to work with, Foligno and Taylor Hall? Levshunov will be a big part of Bedards offense but probably not next season, might get called up from Rockford. And Moore is 1yr away, not a few. We'll see how free agency and the summer goes, Bedard might be getting help. Everything went wrong last season but it'll only get better, Bedards third year is when things will really start to turn around.

bits 'n bobs in the draft thread... The last part says you can add size in free agents and trades but KD addressed it with this draft.

I am not excited about this draft but after Celebrini, there were questions about almost every player so I don’t think it was a disaster and if KD is already considered a failure then Yzerman should have already been fired as he has not replicated his Tampa success in the Motor City . And maybe KD did do a lousy job this time but not sure we can say that for a while . If Demidov is indeed Ovie reincarnated, then he blew an opportunity. Meanwhile Levshunov should progress as a player.

I was surprised they didn't take a goalie this year, but all reports indicated this was a down year for them.
I foresee us having to trade for one down the road, unless Gajan or Commesso really pans out over the next couple years.
or maybe let's just trade for Askarov now.

Yes I saw that but no, it actually makes me feel worse. If they were willing to give up what was reported to acquire the 4th pick for the purpose of drafting Demidov - then they either should have taken Demidov at #2 and tried to find a way to move up to take Levshunov - OR - they misread the board and didn't make the best move. The primary reason for my disappointment isn't that they selected Levshunov over Demidov per se - there are possibilities for acquiring other great players - it's that that decision is the first time I think KD made a significant misstep and what that portends for future rebuild decisions. In a nutshell - I had faith that KD is the right person to steer the rebuild to success - now that faith has been shaken.

I believe this draft was extremely successful.
The defence is basically now set up for the next eight to ten years. There is real depth at the centre position for the first time in perhaps ever. The team has plenty of potential checking wingers with game breaking speed to fill holes up and down the lineup.
Some remain concerned about the team's ability to score goals. I think this apprehension is largely misguided, especially long term as the prospects (especially on defence) mature. Bedard will only get better. He is already arguably the best shooter in the game; his playmaking abilities will soon rival Patrick Kane's. Whomever he plays with will produce plenty of offense. A contending team only really needs one of these types.
What's left to do now? I still think Davidson needs to add a 6'4" 235 pound winger with the size, meanness and bulk to park himself in front of the net on the powerplay, win battles in the corners and chip in rebounds. Ideally, the player would have the talent to play on the first line (Corey Perry from his Anaheim days/Marian Hossa), but if not, a Bickell/Byfuglien/Brouwer/Hartnell type would be the model. But finding one might have to wait until next year. Perhaps a short term answer might come on the UFA or trade market.

Savoie, Marcel², Stjernborg and a few others could fill the 4C spot. There's options now, even Dach could be a center, that's what he played in the WHL.

Bedard more than likely is a winger. Now they’ve drafted centers. But is that what we’re getting? I fear for the lack of size in the center position. And not just the bottom 6. I hope someone steps up to these roles, or a trade happens. But need that big centerman with skill!!!

Bedard has plenty of time to learn how to take faceoffs and play in the defensive zone. The Hawks drafted him as a centre, and the team will develop him as a centre. He has the talent and will adjust.
I was hoping the Bruin's pick 6'7" Dean Letourneau would fall to the Hawks. He did not. Oh well. The team did add a good one in Boisvert to the prospect pool, and there are now a large collection of potential second line centres in the system.
I agree that the team still could use a big hulking third line shutdown type with strong faceoff skills. My feeling moving forward: Draft big centres high in the first two/three rounds every year. Hopefully at some point you find the next Joel Otto. If not, make a trade or buy one in UFA. One of Stan Bowman's best moves as general manager was adding the great Martin Handzus in a trade for a fourth round pick.
Dickinson is not a huge guy, but he is more than adequate in the short term.

In regards to Bedards third season, I hope you are right, that’s when we will see significant change for our Hawks.

As most here know, my first preference was to trade down. But we all knew that dream was likely unrealistic. Clearly the scouts all recognized that the talent pool was flat at the top of the draft. Buium could have gone in the top three but fell to Minnesota. The player chosen third was projected by many outside the top ten.
My second choice was to take the right-shot Levshunov with pick two. I also advocated picking the big centre Boisvert with pick 18 (though I also considered taking Eiserman). I was hoping Davidson would focus on high floor types close to being ready to play who would fill positional needs. He did exactly what I wanted him to do, not just at the top of the draft but all the way through.
I especially liked management's strategy in the later rounds. Unlike Bowman (who would often waste late picks gambling on small perimeter wingers), Davidson seems to focus in the later rounds on players who might actually find a role in the NHL. Your third and fourth liners need to be able to handle the physical game and wear down the opponent. All three of those third round picks could become professional players.

Yes they are deep at the blue line and the d-menhave size which bodes well for playoffs once we get to that point. Do need some size and snarl up front still and maybe they have guys already who can assume that role - not sure
