it certainly appears that the 'yotes are not long for the Valley and will be heading to the shores of the Great Salt Lake next season. so then, I ask you all:
what should their name be?
I'll go first with a couple I am fond of...
the Utah Smiths.
the Utah Golden Plates.
SLC Punks.
the special lady prefers the Utah Salt Pillars.
what say you all?

Why not just leave it Coyotes. I'm sure they have them in Utah. they are EVERYWHERE. I saw them in the spring walking home from work on the north side when I was living in Chicago. in broad daylight (mating season). they could name every single sports team in America the Coyotes and it would work, lol.

They are also hoping to get an MLB team. Someday. I have not heard that the current owner of the Yotes is selling the team. They told the players and employees about the move. The owner had also said he and his group had 1.8 billion for the Phoenix plan. But Scottsdale shot that down.

At least thats how i understand it I actually hope they do end up (er, stay, whatever you want to call it) in Arizona. I always loved that team since its inception; part of the reason was because I followed Roenick there. But that old squad was nasty: Roenick, Tkachuk, Drake, Tocchet, Khabi, Lumme, Numminen, Doan, the list goes on. Plus I always loved their Kochina jerseys, especially the black ones -- I know people dog those, but I was so glad they brought those back.

Thirty years there, there’s a lot more people involved other than just the players and management. It’s actually kinda sad to see it finally fall apart. I might live near Edmonton and I am for sure not a fan of the team but even I realize that losing your franchise, which Edmonton came close to doing, is a pretty big blow to a city. Name me any other thing that can draw a city together, even if you’re not even a fan of the sport, than a pro team on a good playoff run.

The word I’m getting from a buddy who’s very close to the situation is this. The Coyotes current owner Alex Meruelo will sell the team more than likely to the NHL. The NHL will sell the team to Ryan Smith. There is word that the old owner and new owner may just cut out the middle man. As part of the deal the NHL has agreed to give Arizona an Expansion team as soon as they get their arena deal done.
So if true. Arizona will more than likely be amongst 2 teams that get expansion. Due to the current state of Canada. I doubt there’s a team coming here. Don’t want to get into politics. But canada is just not working anymore. And I doubt many players will want to come here and make a team successful.
Also, I’m not a fan of having 33/34 teams. I think it’s stupid and very watered down. The only good news is Bedard will put up 200 points in a year. Only because there’s not enough supply to meet the demand!!!

That was why a few years back the NHL and AHL got together and figured how to get the AHL close to the parent team so call ups wouldn't take a day or 2 before arriving.

Tucson should be a 54 minute flight to SLC. Not the worst. But airports do take a year off your life every time you’re in one. So let’s say a 4 hour travel window to get to the big club. That’s not that bad. You could call up a kid in the AM, and he could be ready to go that evening. Still, closer would be better.
I honestly wonder if many will actually want to play there due to the Morman influence around there? The owner is a Morman. I don’t personally care. But maybe someone else does? Kinda like Quebec. A lot of guys from Europe spoke their language, English, then had to learn Francois. Many didn’t care for it. And I can understand. Utah Jazz have been meh for quite some time. I’m sure there’s a reason to that!!!

No expert on SLC or the Mormon religion but I'm here in the deep south of Alberta at my brother's place (the leafs fan) and he's lived a Mormon County for the last dozen years and other than being a dry county (he's a pisshead like me), he loves it. He lives in a town of maybe 250 people. Sadly his wife passed away suddenly a couple weeks before Xmas. So many Mormons...some he hardly knew...brought pies, casseroles and the like. A couple even brought beer amazingly. So they're nice people without a doubt. Looking at SLC on wiki...I read that only 49% of the city were Mormons. Also on a sidenote, the population was just over 200k making it the 117th largest city in the U.S. I guess there must be a lot of satellite cities and towns around.

I guess I am not eager for change and this makes it tough on the hockey fan base in Phoenix such as it is. The franchise is on the verge of having some sustained success. Not getting the stadium deal done was a killer.there had to be a way to get that done wouldn’t you think? SLC is booming and while it’s on the opposite spectrum from a Vegas for partying and night life, it’s a great place to raise a family with low crime etc. I used to visit clients in Park City and it was a fun town and only an hour or so from the airport

I even had considered getting a place there myself for the winter months and go to games there.

Cuz NHL players drink a lot. I don’t believe NHL players are into “soaking”. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s just a different way of life that rich young kids may not enjoy. I’d like to give my condolences to your brother and your family. That’s really awful to go through!!! Edit. My good friend Kevin, his grandson is on our team. His daughter just passed away at 25. We’re all destroyed by this. It’s not easy. I hope your family can find some solice in this. Never easy!!!

Might be wrong of course, only the future will tell... as obsessed as Gary had been with keeping the yotes there for so long, I have to believe there will be another team there eventually. it is one of the larger metro areas in the country and a *successful* team would make money there. and therein lies the rub... I feel pretty confident that the deal is: "let us move this team now and get this guys money in Utah and you get the arena deal done. then we'll let ya have a Vegas-style expansion draft so you don't have to start off too shitty".

This is a video about the arena in SLC is a basketball arena at 18000 seats. But for hockey it will hold 12000. Like the barclay center. Maybe some rehab will be done.
Or build a new real hockey arena.
