Kaiser in the lineup tonight - replacing Allan and paired with Murphy. Happy to see they have him playing his natural LD rather than playing RD like he did sometimes last season. We were spoiled with Hjammer, so I agree. Lets try to keep all the D-men on the right (correct) hand.

How much longer will Allan remain with the club? My guess - perhaps a week or less unless there is an injury.
Kaiser has demonstrated that he is more than ready for full-time action. None of the others likely will be benched unless there is an injury, nor should they.... As it stands, this defence looks more cohesive than at any time in the last half decade.
I don't see Allan breaking in to the lineup any time soon and would prefer him in Rockford playing heavy minutes. Two games of sitting and watching won't hurt him much, but we certainly don't want this to become a pattern. The player can be recalled at any time when there is a need. There is not one right now.
Levshunov is close to being ready again. If both he and Allan return to Rockford's lineup, the IceHogs will be stacked on defence. My guess is that one of the veterans, Strand or Fitzgerald, will be moving back and forth as the substitutes riding the bench most of the season

Brodie played well against Winnipeg but he was awful against Utah and not much better against Edmonton.

Brodie is a proven NHLer with a long track record in the league.
It will take a few games for him to learn the players and the system. No coach would bench a big UFA signing after three games and embarrass his general manager.
I don't see any of the other veterans being disciplined for poor performance either. It is just not going to happen often, nor should it. Until there is an injury, it will be Allan or Kaiser sitting every night (which is less than ideal).
Davidson needs to step up to protect Allan from being wasted. Send him ASAP to Rockford where he can play big minutes and develop his game fully. Bring up a veteran AHL slug to sit as the spare. I thought Phillips was destined for this role. Now I am thinking it might be Strand or a waiver wire pickup.
Regarding Reichel: Here the situation is different. Reichel has already demonstrated he can play. His problem is entirely mental. I have no problem with him sitting for an extended period to start the year. He is near the end of his rope. He needs to recognize his career is in jeopardy. A huge fire is now lit under his ass. He needs to respond the next opportunity he gets. It might be his last.

You can sit out older d-men like Brodie and Martinez on back to back games and the same for forwards like Hall. Injuries will come to guys like Martinez and Murphy with all the shots they block, usually they're league leaders in that. That's why I think Allan and Kaiser will get some quality playing time.

When he does play, I wonder if it will be for an extended period, or if it will be a few games then sit, then play a few more, etc. I would think it would help him mentally if he knew he would be in the lineup for a while, and not back to the bench after a few games.

Your point about his contract situation is valid, unfortunately.

The coach has now established the pecking order. Allan is the seventh guy, the first up when there is a need.
At issue right now - there is no need for a regular sub. The top six likely will be playing every day for the next several weeks. A sub could be recalled from the AHL on short notice and be available to play within a 24 hour window.
Allan does not need to be watching games from the press box. Neither does Kaiser, the only realistic sub-out at this stage to allow Allan to play.
The coach is going to give all the veterans plenty of time to hang themselves. If Brodie or one of the others is truly done, a decision about the player is not about to come any time soon.

Checking Brodie, Murphy and Martinez's years, usually Murphy and Martinez miss a good 3rd of a season each to injury. Brodie has been a bit more durable than the other 2.

I won't pretend to know the proper path for Reichel, play him,top six, bottom six,sit him or send him down are the team's choices right now. I do know this though, keeping him up and sitting him half the starts with limited TOI when he does play will end-up with him having about as much trade value as Mitchell did after the same treatment.

Maybe a Ahl conditioning assignment will be incoming for Reichel Believe if he doesn’t play any games for two weeks. They can send him down without waivers for a bit to get back to game speed. No reason to panic yet hawks do have some older forwards who have had their share of missed time.

I certainly don't blame Reichel. Management and the coaching staff ruined a promising prospect by attempting to slot him as a second line centre with no support on his line.
The kid's confidence is shattered, and he seems to have lost enthusiasm and concentration. He does need to get his head out of his ass and start playing a hard game.
I thought he looked lost and somewhat disinterested during the preseason games.
How do you refocus him? Is he beyond redemption? I don't know. Sending him back to Rockford would make little sense. He has nothing to prove there any longer and would likely be claimed if waived. Unfortunately, he is worth nothing in a trade.
To my mind, the best approach might be to sit him and wait for an injury. One will happen at some point. He will need to capitalize on the opportunity when he gets it.
The Reichel dilemna is similar to the Ian Mitchell situation from a couple of years ago. It is also why I am concerned about Allan. The Hawks have been dreadful about player development for many years now. They don't seem to have a real game plan on how to groom their prospects. Drafting has not really been the big problem here.

Mitchell is almost 26 and still can't crack the NHL, his problem isn't with how he was developed. KDs staff is much better than the last guy and they actually want to develop players here and not just give them a spot. Like Vlasic playing a full season in Rockford in all situations and he's looking good now. And for the last time, Reichel was a center for two seasons in Rockford, he was horrible when they tried him there in Chicago and not because of his linemates, he played extremely timid and couldn't make a pass or get shots off.

Bowman drafted Reichel as a winger. Scouts touted him at the time as a great forechecker/ board guy who could play a heavy game despite his size (like Kyle Calder).
In their wisdom, KD and his coaching staff attempted to convert the kid to centre in Rockford. Reichel produced at about a point/game pace over two plus seasons there - 116 points in 121 games.
After yo-yoing the kid back and forth to the big club over a couple of seasons, they shifted him back to wing on the Kurashev/Athanasiou line around the trade deadline two years ago. The kid responded fairly well for a few weeks (15 points in 23 games).
So then Davidson and staff decided he was ready to be the second-line centre full time, playing with a revolving door of mediocre linemates who'd never produced big numbers in the NHL.
He bombed in the role, no question about it. But what does anyone really expect? He was cannon fodder for a tanking team.
Regarding Mitchell - he was a good prospect ruined by bad coaching and poor development. Kirby Dach was an exceptional prospect overwhelmed by ridiculous expectations and a poor development plan. We can't keep blaming the kids.
The ones who have made it in recent years (Vlasic and Kaiser in particular) developed appropriately through the college system.

Part of the issue here is unrealistic expectations:
Reichel should have been groomed as a two-way winger who would top out at 45-55 points.
Dach was best suited to be a second line defensively responsible centre who would produce 50-60 points.
Neither was ever going to be a superstar. Both should have been highly useful players. When you attempt to jam square pegs into round holes, they don't always fit well.

This is clearly the best approach for a team with cup aspirations. I'm not convinced sitting kids with a rebuilding roster, however, helps with their professional development. It is time to get Allan out of there as soon as the road trip ends.

But if you’re going to slip AA, Donato and Smith in and out of the lineup there must be a way to get Reichel some playing time. The fore mentioned three, along with Maroon and Anderson, aren’t long term pieces. No reason there can’t be some kind of platoon system put into practise.

I think this is a direct message to Reichel. His pre season was atrocious. Let’s not make excuses anymore. There was no effort. When a player gets “ruined” it doesn’t mean that they put in an absolute shit effort every night. It means they make bad decisions or try to do too much etc. Reichel has zero effort.
So I believe the org is sending him a message that they’ll let him sit in the press box all year. He’s fucking around, he’s about to find out what press box ass is. He’s been given every opportunity to get in the lineup. Now they don’t have to play him. I think he’s ok with that. I’ve never seen a player so non interested in being competitive..
Next time he gets in, if he plays like he doesn’t care, then he’ll be back to getting press box ass for a looooong time!!!

Martinez was placed on the IR, groin. Phillips was called up Getting the 23yro some substantial game time this year is almost a necessity IMO. Phillips got 33 games of big league experience last year(53 total),he had two full, solid seasons at Rockford(2 1/2 total) and he has the size and frame to endure the physical part. Like Crevier,a very important decision has to be made this summer, has the player shown enough improvement to be considered part of the team's future and get an extension or is he just part of an overabundance of young L/S D-men and end-up being a throw-in on an upcoming trade? I don't think any NHL team ever gets the chance to properly assess every kid in their system before a big decision has to be made, that's why I'm still a bit surprised the FO hasn't taken a shot at acquiring another team's young player they don't have room for and didn't give enough of a chance because of it. Forsling's a beast now,TVR's a big part for the Caps,The Joker's a reliable starter,Rutta's been a starter for better teams,'Gus' too, Regula came real close to making Boston's roster this year and who knows if Boquivst ever breaks through if he can stay healthy? Now throw-in Mitchell and Beaudin,hell.......even Lucas Carlson's had two great AHL seasons after seeing 40 starts with Fla. The return for all of em was little to nothing.
