I thought for my first post on the new boards it would be appropriate to start with yet another controversial trade proposal.
We all love Lehner and value his game. But he is not likely going to be the elite goalie to lead this team back to contention (a few years from now). Until the team has re-tooled, there is no sense in adding another long term expensive contract. I believe Lehner's best value is as a trade chip.
Package Lehner (with salary retained) and Gustafsson together, and I believe the return would be very strong - perhaps a first round pick and grade A prospect. Would Colorado be interested? Would they give up Byram?

It does result in a Lankinen call up and I'd love to see the kid get a start...….even with our D!LOL! Just think if we see a contender's GT go down to injury over the next month and a half,we could see quite a haul and still re-sign Lehner if he's interested......I just don't see why he would be. I liked the player when signed,I considered 5M a value then and more so now but I didn't think the team was just a goaltender away so I might have used the money differently but this could be a HUGE signing for SB if he does the right thing now...….what are the odds? They either don't want to trade Gus or his value has collapsed after being exposed this year as I predicted it would and I ain't right all that often!

I'd offer Lehner a 3yr contract for 5mill.
Then trade Gus for anything. Elliott Freedman reported the Bruins are interested in Saad, I'd hate to see him go again but I'd offer him and Gus for one of their young dmen and a high prospect or pick.

If so, I would be ok with that deal. Then re-sign Crawford (2 years, perhaps $2.5M/year) and be confident with the situation for a couple of years. I think Lehner will get more money and a longer term - which is something Bowman should not consider at this stage.

He seems like a smart guy and a good teammate, considering what he said about signing a 1yr deal and being confident in his abilities, I don't think he'll demand a large salary and 3yrs at 5mill sounds fair. I doubt Crow will take 2.5, he's been great so let him test the open market.

I'm a big Saad fan and I agree but this is Stan we're talking about, there's also rumors here in Edmonton about Saad to the Oilers. I'd do it if it's Klefbom or Nurse plus a forward prospect, maybe Puljujarrvi. Seems fair for Saad and Gus, they get a 2 time Cup winner to play with McDavid and a PP dman. Hawks get a legit top4 dman with size and youth plus a big skilled forward prospect.

I love me some MVR!
I think it’s best to trade Lehner. I also believe Maatta, Gustafsson, Saad, Shaw (if healthy enough), that’s 5 guys (including Lehner) that we can get some serious assets for in an extremely deep draft.
We have the ability to retain salary in a rebuild situation. Especially on expiring contracts. We have no need to to “chase the dream” anymore. It’s over and time to move forward. It’s getting boring as hell watching Stan fail year in and out. Just tank for Lafreniere and get a plethora of draft picks this year. The rebuild won’t take long!!!

A have never been a fan of a complete tear down. But I do think the time has come to be realistic and start thinking long term.
None of the guys Big T is discussing above is part of the long term solution. Should a team ask about any of them, Bowman would be crazy to hang up the phone.'
I think Gus (given his low salary) and Lehner have the most trade value. But Saad also would interest many teams and so might Maata. These guys all can be replaced. Should Crawford want too much money or term to resign, I think he should go as well.
But there are others. Keith might also be considering a change of scenery, and if so, Bowman should accommodate him. I would also talk to Patrick Kane and get a sense of his feelings.
There is no point in being mediocre. Either go for it, or sink deliberately and rebuild quickly, keeping some core veterans with winning histories to coach the kid.
At this point, I am keeping Toews, Seabrook, Shaw and Murphy, but not so much because of sense of loyalty, but because their mediocre trade value would not justify moving them. Rebuilding teams need a core identity.

I also feel we could get a first for Saad, especially if we retain salary. We could get a 2nd and a prospect for Maatta. I believe a team like Calgary or Edmonton would give up a first for Lehner and Gustafsson, again, we can retain half their salaries due to expiring contracts. I also think guys like Smith are moveable to a contender if about 1/3 was retained.
MVR brought up a solid point about Colorado. Maybe they use Byram as a chip to get some decent players? Also, the Oilers have Broberg and Bouchard. Maybe they part with one for some help?
I, like MVR would take back a bad contract to get assets I need now. Lucic is a perfect example. I’d take him from the Flames if they wanted say Lehner and Gustafsson. We could easily get a 1st, a 2nd and a good prospect from them. It’s not out of the question. Before we lose all these assets, decisions need to be made soon. Can’t keep Lehner and Gustafsson, then miss the playoffs and an opportunity to rebuild!!!

That is sort of how I think of a rebuild as happening. To get the team back to a contender, you need good young potential difference makers and my thinking is to accomplish this you need high draft picks; that's where teams top players usually come from. IS it correct that most of the top guys on a Cup winner come through the draft? To me, trading good players in return for other good players doesn't seem like it really boosts the team that much. To slightly modify Dale Tallon's comment; No one is going to give Stan a whole pig for a pork chop. Looking at contenders that are already good and are close but still lack a piece or two to try and get one of their good young prospects still in juniors, etc. isn't a bad idea.

Rebuilding teams need a core identity. I see more trade value in the cheaper, better Murphy than I do Maata and Shaw's untradeable because every other GM knows of the concussion issues SB ignored. What happens to the one-armed de Haan's 9M the next two years? Keith. It depends on the return and his desire to leave obviously but the team will have to get to the floor somehow after those massive salary dumps and I still see Keith's 5.5M reasonable. Kane. Here's an interesting one from any angle you look at it,I believe he's as valuable a trade chip as possible with only three remaining. What team would he waive for and does the FO have the balls to trade their meal ticket? Toews. I agree with the mediocre trade value assessment but there might be a team out there with enough interest. The Jets have lived the last few seasons in a fruitless hunt for a PO proven 2LC,they parted with 1st's for Stastny and Hayes without the desired results only to lose both the following summer. Hawks might have to retain a bit and take Ehlers and his 6M for five more back. Ehlers is still 23,consistent regular scorer and exactly the fast, smaller forward SB and the Org have always coveted. Why would the Jets make this move. They add one of the games best PO pivots of the last decade who only has three years remaining and lose a young talented wing who's yet to pot his 1st PO goal. Not that the jets need any help drawing but I have to believe the hometown angle would make it a popular move up there. We could easily see the revitalized Toews we saw last year with 2LC duties instead of the grueling 1LC duties and I doubt Maurice would have him out there with AHL level line mates. Seabs. They either bite the bullet like many other teams and buy him out if they're going total rebuild or retain around half the money to trade him,he's probably been scratched often to waive at this point.

We could trade Toews and Kane in their last year of their contracts and sign them in the off-season. Trading them on expiring deals and retaining half of their deals is gonna increase their value. But Wirtz can have the seats filled with his dynamic duo. I don’t believe in trading away your whole identity, it makes a rebuild long and painful. Trade all fringe players, keep the core guys until their final year of their deals and bring em back in the off-season with many gifts from their short departure!!!

Maybe you're right T but I still see a team with Kane,Toews and Keith good enough to be able to avoid the basement......especially with a GT like Lehner or even a healthy CC. I only say this because it's pretty much what we've seen the last two and a half years. Maybe K&T's production could be held down with 4th line and AHL linemates in an attempt to tank but even that doesn't work with Kane.

Also, regardless of the extra picks we could get, I feel our own pick could end up being a top 3 pick which would catapult our rebuilding faze into the next gear. Lafreniere, Byfield and Perfetti are the key guys we’d want. A few others are very good too. Lucas Raymond, Jamie Drysdale. All would be great kids to have too. Gotta get a top 5 pick at all costs this year!!!

I have always preached to trade a player when their replacement is in tow. You’ve made valid points on deHaan, Maatta particularly. Why didn’t the org know that they had those 2 replacements here before we got them? Now we’re stuck with them. The Pens have done a marvellous job at building from within. They traded Kessel, lost Crosby for have a year and they’re kids like Rust etc are killing it. They’ve always traded a guy when they had their replacement ready. They’ve kept their core guys and develop players around them. It’s gross that we’ve done none of that. However. If we trade away and tank, we could get a top 5 pick and get a solid player. Let’s say either Perfetti, Raymond or Drysdale. Add one of them to Dach, Boqvist, Mitchell, Gilbert, Dcat, Strome and say Carlson. We have 8 good lookers under 25. That’s what we need. Trades and free agency can fill the rest. Plus add in Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabs and we have 2/3s of a great roster. Most of them are young. Then if we had 2 more firsts, and 2 more 2nds. We could get good players there or parlay them into a higher pick to a team willing to trade down. It could be better in a hurry if management doesn’t do Stan things again!!!

The Pens ability to stay relevant is sure dam impressive, they pay Sid and Geno only 2.8M less than K&T but Sid and Geno don't stay as healthy as K&T. Then again the Pens didn't spend SIXTEEN MILLION on De Haan,Maata,Shaw and Smith last summer giving up a 2nd,a 3rd,AA and Kahun to do so. The Lehner signing might be the only thing keeping last summer from being SB's worst ever but add in the Joker trade and the Gus no trade and I believe it is. How the fuk don't you come away with three good or two impact players for SIXTEEN MILLION bucks?

Now he’s probably wondering why it’s not working. If you read any of his comments or interviews, he’s now blaming the players. Yes the ones that he brought in. He’s probably a good guy, just not a good GM. It’s seriously just time to go in a different direction!!!

Robin Lehner talked about contract extension possibility, saying he wants to stay with Blackhawks but that the market is promising this summer and he's not willing to take another discount.

If not, he should fetch a good return, if a real gm was trading him, Stan will screw it up.

I would guess that he needed another good season to show that a) his great season last year wasn't just a product of playing for the best defensive coach in the league and b) that his issues regarding mental health were not something anyone needed to worry about long term. either he is traded at the deadline cuz we've sucked the next month or he is given a huge deal by SB before the season is out if we are still remotely in the playoff race at the deadline. those are my guesses.

What if SB says to Crow he is going to offer Lehner a big contract and would you stay as a back-up for cheap? If not would you accept a trade to a contending team?

In case anyone hasn't seen it..... www.nhl.com/news/goalie-robin-lehner-open-to-resigning-with-blackhawks/c-313763644You gotta appreciate the guy's unedited, honest approach but some things can be left un-said too unless SB already made a lowball offer. As much as I like Lehner,I don't see a max term 7-8M deal myself,he's definitely an above average tender but he still gives up a LOT of rebounds. Only three of the top ten highest paid GT's have won a cup if you count Fleury and only five are currently over .500.

If they give Lehner 7M let's say,the team can't afford a 3M backup IMO unless SB's gonna continue to piss money away like he did last summer.
