Wanted to share a little something with everyone.
On July 9th one of my best friends passed away from prostate cancer. He literally turned 49 3 days earlier. His name was Kris Lawrenson. AKA Urban Kris or DJ Urban Kris.
He was a record producer, engineer, DJ and everything under the sun. He did his best work with Eminem as a co-writer and Marshall’s vocal engineer and producer. He worked with him for about 8 years up until or just after the 8 Mile movie. He did a ton of dance remix’s for bands like Korn and a bunch of other 90s early 2000s bands. He helped form and produce the band Tantric.
He also co-wrote and produced the half time show music for CBS college football with Teddy White who’s Aretha Fanklin’s son. I got to finally meet Teddy this week, but under the worst circumstances. What a good man he is.
Kris and I met at a wedding about 10 years ago. Anyone who has known me for some time around here or the old boards knows that played and recorded music my whole life. So Kris and I hit it off pretty quickly and became the best of friends. We were golf junkies for many of those years. He has a daughter that’s 14. And he basically has raised her on his own. He was a good man. One of the best you’ll ever find. He was one of those people that when you meet him, you e already know him for 10 years. Our kids are close. He was what you’d wish for in a Friend. Just amazing. And when you met him, you’d never even know what his last name was. I found out from him giving me his credit card one day to pay for the pizza. It took me and many many others years to find out his last name as he always went by Urban Kris. Many even thought that was his actual name.
You can tell the difference in Eminem’s vocal sound after Kris left and became a dad. It just hasn’t been the same since. And it will never be again.
But the music world and my world lost a legend. RiP brother!
Thought I’d share that!!!

I'm interested in what my Canadian friends think of the young, Michigander's cover of the classic..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF4phFSe_vII was pretty sure they'd nail it musically, but the vocals were spot-on too.

this pic is 15 years old so imagine those hands today. how them gnarly old fingers can still coax a tune out of a guitar defies science, but the rest of his body has been defying science for years so no big surprise.
i'm sure he comes on these boards from time to time, so happy 80th keith richards.

happy 76th birthday to jeff lynne. to me a very under-rated singer with a very pleasing voice.
holy shit. just realized ELO released this song 47 years ago. realizing that makes me feel older than yoda it does.

i keep bumping into old songs that i haven't thought of in years and realize what absolute winners they were (in my mind anyways).
latest is gerry rafferty's "whatever's written in your heart" from his album "city to city".
if i could commandeer someone's voice for my own, it would be his.
i imagine most likely know him from the song "stuck in the middle with you" when he was the lead singer for "stealers wheel".
edit: YT steered this my way, thought it was kind've funny.

i guess musical inspiration can come from just about anywhere. “In the case of ‘Double Vision’, my inspiration came from a hockey game”, writes original Foreigner lead singer/ lyricist Lou Gramm in his book, Juke Box Hero, who along with Foreigner founder/guitarist/composer Mick Jones are my guests In the Studio to explore that blockbuster seven million seller second album of the same name. “The New York Rangers were playing the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and during a flurry in front of the net, one of the Flyers elbowed Rangers goalie John Davidson in the head. He was knocked woozy and had to be helped to the locker room. One of the announcers came on with an update…that the goalie had been experiencing some double vision. Voila!” www.inthestudio.net/online-on-demand/foreigner-double-vision-45th-anniversary/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIn%20the%20case%20of%20%27Double,seller%20second%20album%20of%20the

Ol' Blue eyes held a lotta sway and pop music was still king in America back then. 1967 was the breakthrough year for the Doors 'Light my fire,Hendrix's 'Purple haze',Cream's 'Sunshine of your love' and Van Morrison's 'Brown eyed girl' to name few but 'Nancy' looked better in boots.
