WBBM Chicago reporting Brent Seabrook as unfit to participate on the opening day of camp. I though we'd see a healthy, rested version of the old war horse but I guess not.

Oh no, there goes all that mentoring, unless Seabrook does it from the press box. Maybe it is the start of getting him paid and gone.

The truth of the matter is simply this. The Hawks are not set up for a rebuild or for a youth movement. This is not opinion, it’s absolute fact. The Hawks cupboards are bare. There is not much of value there. Even guys like Tim Soderlund and Sikura have fallen through the cracks and haven’t amounted to much and or are gone. The roster is filled with vets. That’s a fact. It’s really bad when a kid like Dach gets injured and the Hawks rebuild all of the sudden isn’t happening. This is a 7-10 year process regardless of what Stan says. So rebuilding takes about 2 years to rip it apart. Then about 4-5 of drafting and sucking. Look at LA. They dragged their feet in their rebuild too. Now they’ve only been at it for 2-3 years now. They still have a few years left till their anything relevant again. So whether we like it or not. The Hawks best chances to rebuild is to trade away 19, 88, 2, and a few others to maximize the future assets to get the ball rolling. It’s probably better to get newer voices in the room anyways. I’m pretty sure the old guard rules the room and it may be easier for the new wave to come in with no pressure on them, just like the current old guard had. It’s just time to move forward. Stan Bowman isn’t the right guy for this reason. He’s in love with the core guys, and he can’t come to the realization that it’s over and he seriously believes that their just a few young kids away. Boston made some hard decisions this year. They let Krug walk and Chara. They have some good kids there that they have to get positions for and opportunity. And they’re doing it now. Hawks need a new set of eyes on this. Like Boston and LA have done!!! I think the 7-10 year timeline is a little pessimistic for my taste - you could be proven correct, but I'm hopeful it will be more in the 4-5 year range - albeit that requires a lot of things to go "our way". I'm also in disagreement that our prospect cupboard is bare, specifically with Dach and Boqvist already in the NHL and Mitchell slotted to there this season and Reichel in another year or two. Having said that - our prospect cupboard doth not overfloweth - that's for sure. Boston is an interesting case, especially when compared to L.A. and the Hawks. A major factor for Boston remaining competitive while the Hawks and Kings have not is the salary cap. L.A. and the Hawks both have two mega contracts and Boston does not. When Boston got lucky and Pastrnak fell to them in the draft they didn't need to trade him or other key pieces when his ELC expired because they had a better salary structure. Having their core players reasonably priced allowed them to keep/add supplemental players to keep them at a high level. The Hawks have been subtracting those types of core/supplemental players for years where even when they get lucky and find Panarin they couldn't keep him for salary cap reasons.

This year seems to be looking pretty shhhhhtupid for the Hawks so far. I said it before and I’ll say it again. I believe the Hawks are done with Seabs. I think Stan has a bit of angst towards him due to the contract. I could be wrong there, but I read a story a while back about how Stan felt that contract was the end to the dynasty. As he didn’t get the value and Seabs play didn’t help. And that money could’ve been used to keep other players.
In the end. It twas a sweet run. I doubt we ever ever see anything remotely that great again. Never! If you look at the dynasties over the past 5 decades there aren’t too many. Hawks, Wings, Oilers, NY Islanders, Montreal.
It sucks for Seabs or any other legendary hero here. Even if if Stan Bowman was the greatest GM ever, and fans loved him. Most will hate him through these turbulent times. I think it’d be best for him to move on for his own legacy. I feel the fans are one more bad move away from jettisoning the Hawks. It’s gonna happen!!!

7-10 years plays very poorly in the lives of folks who are running out of decades. While I agree with ya. It just takes forever. The main reason is because teams hang on to their stars forever and don’t get a full return for them. Trying to find top end players again is tough. But it’s much easier to find them when you have more high end picks, and or prospects. Something we don’t have any of right now!!!

T, I think you raise an interesting point regarding Stan.
It's that it doesn't really matter if you love Stan or find him an appalling GM. What probably does matter is that he's simply been around too long. Not only does sports have an adage called "You're hired to be fired," but there's yet another one that states that virtually all GM's (and coaches for that matter) have a 10-20 year shelf life.
While I'm not his fan by any stretch, I feel that the "shelf life" for Stan has almost certainly passed.

Wait.........we shouldn't mention the GM's performance in a thread about the team's roster? Who is solely responsible for that roster? i didn't say that at all.

Is it not possible to discuss just the roster without bringing Stan, or whoever else into it? This is just my opinion. When I see the thread title "What's your roster next season?", I interpret that to be a discussion of just the players; that's who makes up the roster. I would think of the thread as a place to discuss who should be on the roster and who might should go to Rockford, what line they should be on, who should be paired with who, what dmen should be paired up and on which pairing, who should be backup in goal. etc.
Again, just my opinion, but I feel how the players were acquired, did Stan give up too much or overpay for him, and some of the moves he's made, is a separate topic from who should be on the roster, what pairings we should see, etc,. It might make for a cleaner thread.

The "Stan is responsible for every bad thing that ever happened" narrative is tedious when it invades every thread and often dominates the discussion. That's not to say criticism of Stan is off limits by any means - only that it would be nice to have a discussion on the Hawks without it becoming a Stan bashing.

I agree Stan is fair game for criticism and there's nothing wrong with it but it can reach a point when it gets overdone; the same thing doesn't need to be said five or six different times (I sure hope I haven't done that ) There's actually a separate "Stan Bowman" thread that was a test thread back in Oct. 19 and it now has 28 pages. It's had some recent posts in the last two-three months with numerous posts complaining about Stan, as to be expected. Maybe that's where discussions on Stan should go? Like the old 'Stan as GM" thread.

I don't think discussing SB's performance should be out of bounds and I don't recall ever suggesting it should be. My sarcasm was meant to imply the hatred of Stan has reached the point of being ridiculous. It permeates every topic. Open up any thread and you can't go more than a few posts without Stan being blamed or dissed for this, that and pretty much everything. It makes me almost wish for Stan to get fired just to experience the vacuum it would cause on Hawks blog sites - whatever would Hawks fans do without Stan to dump on? Maybe start talking about the smart moves a real GM is doing. You're off topic buddy.......pull over.

Are the Hawks the new "Lovable Losers"? By the way, as long as I brought up the Cubs, it is too bad that Stan doesn't copy Theo Epstein and, on his own accord, go bye-bye sayonara adios.

Hey buddy, did you get much snow last night? Stan sux. Man, I'm happy training camp started. It's nice to see the boys on the ice finally. Stan sux. OK, was watching some training camp vids and saw Suter was out there today and scored a nice greasy goal. Stan sux. I get it man, you think Stan sux and I'm not disagreeing - but did you see any training camp video? Stan sux. OK, nice talking to you. Stan sux.

True...and on the other side of this Seabs would be an idiot if he didn't want to cash in on all his remaining contract. The real question is how malicious he wants to be vs. keeping his wife happy. He's within his rights to not waive and within his rights to make a team, list that would make a trade nigh-on impossible. Further, being the fargin icehole I am, If I had as much of an incomptetent boss as he does, I'd want to stick it to him as well. Sure, he could waive for Seattle...but he doesn't have to. Ditto with the rest of the core. Sticking to the team's roster.......will Zach Smith make 3.2M to play in Rockford? Will he even report? Rusty Olesz made 3M+ to play in Rockford too but at least the team dumped a big contract to take that putrid contract. I don't think it matters. Smith's cap hit less something like 1.06M will be on the books irrespective if he plays in Rockford, Indy, HC Davos, or for the California Penal League.

To me, the only interesting aspect of the upcoming season will be whether Kane and/or Toews and/or Keith gets traded; or if Kane does not get traded to see how many points he can register. Otherwise, the losing is going to get old real fast. I' ve never gone thru a season hoping for a complete collapse to get the highest draft pick.

Josh Ho-Sang placed on waivers by Islanders. For $700,000 it could be a low risk high reward pick up. If it doesn't work he could be sent to AHL.

Think you'd hear something about Seabs two days from puck drop, the only thing I've read the last week or so was Scambo saying his shoulder and hip surgeries had nothing to do with his absence. Five more months of recovery and conditioning since Seabs opted out of the bubble should have led to a healthier player and a better conditioned player. Not hearing anything from him or the team about his situation is a bit surprising at this point but out of sight....out of mind ain't gonna address the 6.8M due him or the 3.2M due Smith.

Think this thread needs to be revived, because trying to predict the roster for the 2023/24 Blackhawks is going to be a challenge.
Who on the current roster returns? Obviously Seth Jones if for no other reason to reach the cap floor. Murphy continues to prove he's a loser wherever he goes. Mrasek probably remains for his cap, but who backs him up. I wouldn't put a kid in, it would likely destroy his career. If not Stalock, what other 30 something vet can they sign?

Lost among the daily angst over dwindling odds of winning the Bedard sweepstakes is the progression of many of the Hawks young players.
Building through the draft is part of how to rebuild a franchise. Incrementally improving on the existing talent is another key component.
Since the start of the new year, but especially following the trade deadline, Caleb Jones' game has seriously turned a corner. He still attempts to force plays on occasions, but these errors are becoming far fewer. Now he plays 23-25 plus minutes/game with his brother, typically against the opponent's best players. For the most part, the pairing has provided shutdown numbers. This is by definition a top-pairing defence pairing.
Defencemen can take years to develop and feel confident. Caleb is still young and learning. If he and some of the other emerging young players (Anderson, Katchouk, Entwistle, Raddysh, Mitchell, Reichel, Guttman, Kurachev, Bjork) continue progressing, the rebuild will accelerate that much more quickly. If I am Davidson, I am re-signing this player for at least the next four years.
