Did you not watch the latest Hawks video on the draft? Mark Kelley basically ran the thing, at the Hawks pick, they had a list narrowed down, and Mark asked Stan...... “who’s your guy”? Stan clearly made the choice that he wanted Lucas Reichel due to his skill and he has a very high ceiling. I’m not sure how that’s all on the scouting staff? Those are guys that Stan scouted personally when the Hawks played Reichel’s team in Europe. Stan said so himself. If the final decision is the GMs, and he keeps missing, where does the blame lie? And if it truly was the scouting staffs problem, it’s still the GMs problem cuz he doesn’t get rid of them and allows them another year of failure. Now, the farm system hasn’t produced much either. Sure the scouting staff can blame them and the farm can blame the scouting staff for not getting good enough players. However, while all this was going on, Stan allowed this to all unfold. Hence, he’s not a hockey guy. He shouldn’t be in there. Now, this is no longer on Bowman as all he does is fail, it’s on his bosses. The organization from the top down is weak. It will continue on o be weak until the madness up top ends. If any really feels that Stan Bowman is going to magically learn how to GM, it won’t happen. A Wirtz is a Wirtz is a Wirtz. They don’t change. Does anyone really think that Stan got a promotion? He’s doing the work of 2 people for the same wage. I guarantee it. He may have gotten a wee bump in pay but he’s under contract and if he wants to keep it, he’s gotta work his way out of it. Now, it’s almost impossible to be a coach/GM. It’s even harder to be a GM/President. I heard an interview with Brian Burke about his time as President of the Flames. He said that his duties would be to take a lot of the burden off of the GM (Treliving) so he could focus on hockey more. He said there’s a lot of duties a GM has to do and Burke would handle a lot of them so he could be laser focused on the draft, TDL and summer UFAs etc. So at the end of the day. If the GM fails at most aspects of his job ( scouting staff, farm team, etc) they will not be successful. If they’re not successful, that’s on his bosses to decide the future!!! Did you not see the video where Stan asked Kelley (I think it was a clip from the virtual draft) if he wanted the defenseman or the skilled forward? Kelley answered the skilled forward due to his upside and felt he could be a key part of the top 6. Earlier in the video Kelley had asked Stan if he liked Reichel and all Stan said was "I like him a lot." He also liked Guhle because he said the question between Guhle and Reichel was which one had higher value at 17. And Kelley said Guhle could be a pillar. That sounds to me like Stan and Kelley both discussing the two players and both men liking both players but both preferring Reichel for his upside. Montreal settled the matter at 16. I never got the impression Stan dictated who the Hawks would take. And let's remember, there are other picks in a draft besides the first rounder and someone has evaluate these players and decide who to take in rds. 2-7. I'm betting it's not Stan. Don’t forget that once Guhle was gone. That’s when Stan said he was going with Rychel. Mainly due to him scouting him when the Hawks played him. I think the problem is Stan has his fingerprints all over the early drafts and the scouting staff has had to try and make up for it in later rounds. Let’s say you’re 100% right. That’s another Stan Bowman blunder. He should be jettisoning the whole scouting staff. If they’re really that bad, he needs to step up and make the move. He left the farm to fall apart for about 6 years and finally made a move. This whole organizational mess is on him. All he’s doing now is doing the work of two men so the Wirtz’s won’t fire him, he’s saving them probably over a million by doing two jobs. That’s why he’s still there. He’s kissed the right cheeks and or spread them. He has comfort knowing he ain’t going anywhere, so it’s his little play thing. If he was better at his job overall, I’d say give him another shot. But the facts are he’s been miserable at this line of work. He only survived because Q gave him a list of players he’d like or players like them and Stan made the trades. It was set up from the ladies tee’s for him. He wanted Q gone simply because Q had a lot of power in the player dept. getting rid of him signalled that the team should enter a rebuild. Now he’s got a coach who absolutely is not what they need. Maybe on a truly rebuilding team, but not a team full of vets. That’s also on Stan!!!

True, once Guhle was gone Reichel was the pick, although I got the impression the Hawks liked Reichel over Guhle since Kelley told Stan said he liked Reichel for his upside and top 6 future right after the 15th pick but before the 16th pick was made. So I really don't know if they would have taken Guhle instead of Reichel if both guys had been available. In mentioning the scouting staff; I have wanted to ask on here several times what makes a good scout as compared to a not so good scout. Once you get past the higher level guys, different scouts can have varying opinions on players. I've been curious how some scouts will have different evaluations than others might on the same player. We see this a lot in the rankings of various scouting services when there can be considerable differences in where they're ranked. To use Reichel as an example; the Hawks obviously had him rated highly and worth taking at 17. I would be curious how the teams drafting at 18 to around 25 had him rated.

I must have been looking at a different video than the rest. Reichel was the original choice of both Stan and Kelley at #17. After Montreal took Guhle, Stan and Kelley were as excited as two drunken fools that just won the lottery.

After Montreal took Guhle, Stan and Kelley were as excited as two drunken fools that just won the lottery. The video I watched was titled "On the Clock; Season 4, Episode 2. It shows what you mention; Reichel was really the choice for both men because of his skill and ceiling even though they liked Guhle too. After the 15th pick, Kelley said "beautiful"; referring to the draft going how they thought it would and Reichel still there. That's when Kelley replied to Stan he wanted the F over the d-man. After Guhle went next, Kelley said "We got him, I mean we just played it right out."

OK well now I just spoke to someone else who says concussion issues and extreme depression over Stan/Crow situation, state of team, and breakup with GF that left him in a HORRIBLE place mentally...

OK little update here for you guys:
The good news: People better than the first source don't believe it is ALS.
The middle news: They still aren't 100% sure what it is.
The bad news: Many are 100% convinced it is concussion related combined with depression, and as I was reminded today... this would be AT LEAST concussion 4 that we know about in his pro career and I believe he had one prior to his NHL career. At some point, 5 concussions take their toll.

Nobody's 100% sure till there's an announcement and it might surprise all of us when it comes.

Nope Bickell had sclerosis. Als is way worse. Lethal within couple of years. Check it out on wiki. Not a good read...

it was a bit unsettling when they introduced the hawks in the UC before the game and everyone including dach, nylander and seabs were there and although they announced his name there was no captain.

😆 that's equally unsettling. Smith and Seabs are both on IR which I believe can only be for ten games so we'll see what happens with both soon. I thought Smith had every intention of coming to camp and playing but the team announced early on that he wouldn't be in camp and then waived him(he cleared)which a team can't do with an injured player but now he has a bad back like Seabs......convenient? The player, team doctor and the league will have to go along with a LTIR designation with either guy so it could get interesting if Smith doesn't want to report to Rockford.

I think for Smith, it’s probably better to have his contact terminated, then take a one year “prove it” deal and then try for another 3 year deal after that to finish her up. Right now, if he goes to the farm, he’s done. But maybe he’s ok with that!!!

But, he may just take his money and go to the farm and fade away!!!

He might not see 3.2M the rest of his career with the flat cap,he can't even make the Hawks roster(LOL).....he better grab the 3.2 and not look back. Better veteran players than him have signed for less than 1M all over the league. He actually has a M-NTC clause too................gotta love Scambo!

not that a person doesn't deserve his privacy but it's frustrating not knowing.
