Here’s the main problem. Players just don’t protect themselves. That kid should be chipping the puck in and going around Trouba. Trouba does not give a free pass. Everyone should know this. Instead he tries to beat Trouba along the boards and he crushes guys there. I just think the hit is bad timing, the kid seemed to lower himself to embrace for the hit, and Trouba’s shoulder got him right in the head. Now if anyone here played or plays. You’d know that play happens quick on the ice. So, does Trouba get suspended and others for a hit like that? At some point that’ll be a problem as hitting will be dead to the game. It already is. There’s maybe 10-20 big hits in the NHL per year now. Where there used to be 1-2 per night. Gotta be careful what we wish for. Cuz it could blow up in your face!!! just my opinion, but over the last 50 years the game has changed. it's still the same game but the players are bigger, faster and the equipment they wear should be called what it is...armor. hard as a fckn' rock. again...in my opinion the rules should be changed accordingly. i don't necessarily mean longer suspensions...i think they should all go back to old style '60s type of equipment, especially on the elbows and shoulders. we all know the dangers of too many concussions. call it pussification if you like but it just rubs me the wrong way when players lose their way later in life, or kill themselves. I don’t think anyone disagrees about a guy being hurt. But what should Trouba do there? Let him by? Be forced to not hit him? No one wants to see the kid laying there. Players have to be responsible for their decisions. Both in giving and receiving. Like Tua did in football a month ago. He had every chance to slide, yet he chose to go head first into Hamlin. He had 10 yards to decode to slide in a meaningless game. They were down by 20. I think Hamlin made a great tackle, but Tua should be responsible for his insane play. Just like that kid should know to chip the puck in and go after it where you have a better grip on things. Why do you think coaches always say “get pucks deep”? There’s a reason for that. If there’s a discussion to be had here, it’s not just “the rules should be changed”. How? I don’t have a clue how you stop that play. Maybe you do? As fans we can’t just say we don’t like the results so change it. I’m all for a real discussion on how to change it. Brian Burke brought up the “bear hug” idea where guys wouldn’t get interference calls for laying up and being able to grab a guy and pin him to the boards. I do not know if that would work, but maybe it’s worth a shot!!!

in 1970/71, bobby orr set the nhl record for most points by a defenseman with 139. his points/game average worked out to be 1.78 across 78 games.
after 8 games this season makar has 15 points averaging 1.875/game.
pro-rated to 82 games makar would have 153 points, obliterating orr's record.
oh yeah, i know. there's a long old way to go yet but makar's start has been impressive.

Not a hater or a fan, but not bad for a guy who 3 years ago had an unmovable albatross contract.

Not a hater or a fan, but not bad for a guy who 3 years ago had an unmovable albatross contract. It was only two summers ago when we saw Alex Lyon wrestle the net from 'Bob' late in the '22-23' season and also start Fla's first three PO games too. The undrafted 30yro helped the Cats win their last six games with a 1.5 GAA and a .956 sv% and to secure the 2nd WC spot in the East. 'Bob' was listed with a 'Non-Covid illness' at the time but I thought Maurice was the one with the 'illness'......he was sick of 'Bob's play. Alex Lyon struggled in the 1st round and 'Bob' returned to lead the team to the SCF and has been the most important GT in the league since after a few 'so so' seasons in Fla IMO.

this season we're only 3 points ahead of them. (or behind, depending how you look at it)

kirby once again checking to see if his skates are properly tied while the game is in play, then gets clipped by couturier.
wifi stared down couturier in the corner, couturier drops the gloves first, then wifi obliges.
a gloveless nick seeler flies in from out of nowhere and joins couturier against wifi. in total, 0 punches thrown, wifi end up on his back with 2 flyers looking down at him.
the only penalty called is 2 minutes on wifi for unsportsmanlike against couturier. go figure.

I still contend that no GM could have passed-up the two 1st round picks for Brandon Hagle at that stage of his career but GOD DAM! One of those picks better turn into something special because 26yro Brandon Hagle has become an outstanding two-way player who embodies more of Marian Hossa's qualities than the Hawks have had since the great player resigned. Watch more TB games if you disagree!

I watched him closely since he was acquired by Chicago because he was always on the scoresheet in Red Deer, the highlights showed a guy with a high IQ and drive. He was a fan favorite quickly in Chicago and Foley talked about him a lot. It shouldn't be a surprise he's doing great when he's entering his prime. You're right, no GM could pass up two 1st round picks, plus 2 forwards who are 6'3" in their mid 20s, lost both for nothing but they still have Moore and Boisvert. Both have high ceilings, especially when scouts have used McDavid and Toews to describe certain aspects of their games.

Makar and MacKinnon extended their point streaks to start a season at 12gms.
Orr and Esposito had a 10gm streak to start a season, so this doesn't happen often.

Just another example of a team that let a good, young player 'fall through the cracks' or get lost in the shuffle. I guess in Hagel's case, his willingness to play a physical/energy role when he came up made it easy to 'pigeon-hole' him as little or nothing more but I believe you and I both thought he had a lot more to offer. His "high IQ and drive" are on display every game and every shift, he's no longer tasked with that physical/energy role but his TOI is at a career high and Cooper trusts his two-way game and penalty killing big time.....the snarl is still there when necessary too. The kid's missed ONE game in 2 1/4 seasons in TB and is on pace to surpass his 26gls/75pts season. Carolina acquired both Forsling and Forsberg in the DeHAAN trade, they gave Forsberg 3 starts before waiving him and Forsling NONE before waiving him. Forsling became one of the league's best all around D-men and Forsberg pitched his 2nd SO of the season for Ottawa Saturday night. More examples of teams not having room for all of their young players or just losing patience, this will continue to happen.

bit of a pay drop coming off 7 years of 5 million, but at least he's still in the game.
well technically at least. he hasn't played a regular season minute in any league so far this year.

preds dead last in the league.
i feel for brunette. when your first year g.m. (who was 3rd in coaching wins in nhl history) is making threats like that, you got to be feeling some heat.
i like it, i love it.....

lankinen had been gold this season going 7-0-2 with a .923% and a 2.08.
he made some great saves this game, but he got yanked in the 3rd tonight allowing 7 goals on 27 shots.
and here's one of those weird old stats that make no sense at all.

Maybe there’s some deal here to be made. Give them someone they need and get back one or more of their lower end prospects to fill out some weak spots in the system. Someone like Ciona or Laing.
