I’m not a Byfield fan at all. I just don’t think he’s the premier center at the NHL level!!! Wasn’t he still the youngest player on the team? Still, after getting a taste of it last year I was expecting more from him as well. Doesn’t use his size much at all, a gentle giant. It’s probably going to be his team next time around. This better leave a bad taste in his mouth. Being down 1-0 after being dominated for long stretches in the first wasn’t horrible but coming out that poorly in the second was pretty inexcusable. Still, a good showcase for the future of hockey. Lots of talent on all those teams. But I wonder how many good kids on the lesser teams get overlooked due to the overall weakness of their squads. Marco Rossi gets 120 points in junior last year, but he and his AustrIan teammates managed just one goal in the tournament. Hard for anyone to stand out in a group like that. im also curious how Reichel would have fared if he’d been able to play with Germany. Stutzle and Peterka both had strong showings, wonder how Lukas would have done.

This really is a showcase for the non-drafted

The thing that surprised me and I was surprised was the way the US was able to execute their game plan against a better team. I didn't expect the zone time the Yanks created with their forecheck,I thought any offense they'd muster would have to come off the rush or a break but they do have a few relentless kids with some ability too. Boldy is a kid who might make it by playing that way and I thought Turcotte does a lot of things that'll help him in the NHL. Defense did more than hold their own as well, good decisions and exits were important but their play when Canada had possession was impressive considering how good those Canadian kids are. Stellar net front play by the US D-men and up the middle too but staying out of the box against such talented forwards was HUGE and staying out of the box might be the thing that won this game for the Yanks. I can see York being a stud! Knight has a hell of a future ahead of him after a great tourney but I woulda liked to see Wolf in one start.....his WHL stats are MINDNUMBINGLY good!
Maybe not being pushed hurt the Canadian kids, the Finns coming back and scarring the crap outta the US kids kept them focused a hell of a lot better than a 4-0 win would have!
I thought it was a cleanly played and well officiated game and all participants walked away healthy.

WJC camp starts next week, 6 Hawks prospects will be at the USA camp in Mich.
"The six Blackhawks prospects will be evaluated at camp next week in hopes of competing in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton this summer, which was originally scheduled for December 2021 and January 2022. This camp will also serve as an evaluation of the roster for the 2023 World Juniors, which are set to take place Dec. 26, 2022 through Jan. 5, 2023 in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick."

I was going to take my son to Edmonton to catch this. We had plane vouchers from our canceled Florida trip in March due to Covid. So now the airline was making us make 2 layovers and from Detroit to Calgary would have been 14 hours. So we scrapped that idea. It wasn’t even that expensive. For 4 of us the tickets we’re gonna cost $650 for every Canada game. Even the medal rounds. But due to piss poor travel plans, we’re not gonna make it. So im heading to Cancun on Sunday instead.
Would’ve been real cool for it to worked out. Never been to a WJC game. Hopefully Detroit gets it soon!!!

Since this tourny is replacing the canceled ones from dec-21-Jan22. Maybe they go by age and he WAS 20 when the games were to be played. Later this year will be the 22/23 WJC.

The World Juniors is for players 19 and under. this quote taken from the bottom of the strome article i posted in "around the league." commesso just turned 20 so i believe t-man's right about some 20 year olds being allowed to play in edmonton next month. Hawks top goalie prospect Drew Commesso won’t participate in the rescheduled 2022 World Junior Championships next month in Edmonton, citing personal reasons and preparing for his crucial junior season at Boston University.

Slovak national team representatives confirmed that the Slovaks will play without its top 3 draftees (Slafkovsky, Nemec, Mesar) during the summer WJC. Surely a bummer. Nevertheless, Dalibor Dvorsky and a couple of another good prospects will play. Would be more interesting to have the top 3 draftees, but I'm looking forward to the competition so or so. At least some hockey will be played in the summer.

Looks like Hawks’ prospects made the first big cut to US roster: Kaiser, James, Nazar and Slaggert. Gauthier the #5 pick for Flyers was cut.

I’m not sure that’s entirely chipped in stone. Windsor Spitfire and CHL scoring champ Wyatt Johnston is said to still be on the team. I’ve heard that Dallas isn’t going to take him on their team and they’ll let him play in the tournament.
As for all the Hawks prospects. What did we expect? There really isn’t much in the Hawks system but hope. The newly drafted kids are too young to make the team. Maybe the December team is achievable. But right now, I don’t see them making it.
In another year or so, you’ll see the WJC flooded with Hawks prospects. They’ll have like 10-12 kids in the tourney and all looking good. Better days are ahead!!!

Is not purely WJC connected, but nowadays also Hlinka Gretzky cup is underway. It's a pity that the two tournaments are being played almost in parallel. I'm sure a lot of U18 players are playing also within the U20 WJC and therefore not involved within the Hlinka Gretzky cup. Quality of the pool is imho lower due to this. For example next highly ranked Slovak prospect Dalibor Dvorsky is part of the WJC. On the other hand, will be interesting to watch him against older guys and see what's actually in him. The same goes for other high prospects.
